The Ferrari group can have a few people as described. Not so in the Ginetta owners club...

I think the more popular the marque/make is, the wider group of people it draws, and the more chance for arrogant "status symbol" types. In the late 90s through early 2000s, there was very little of it in the Lotus club in the States, but that's because hardly anyone from the general public knew or remembered what a Lotus was at that point in time; since the U.S. arrival of the Elise, there have been more arrogant/cocky types.

The more obscure the car, the more likely an owner is a true enthusiast, and the stronger the shared interest. :)

I'd guess many were rich guys from my dad's generation(WWII) & older.

I've never been more than an entry-level owner...330 4-headlighter, then 308GTS...and haven't felt "class discrimination" here or on other Ferrari boards.

My experience in 7 years of ownership confirms this. The owners I've met here in Dallas and the service folks (Norwood) are a good group. What you own or don't own is a non-starter here.

The jerks here on Fchat were jerks for some other reason than cars. They're now mostly gone.

I have to say from observation that late-model Corvette owners are the worst when comes to insular behavior...they're a good ole boys' club, to be sure.

I used to own a BMW, too, so don't be too hard on me! :p Just called the situation as I saw it. And no, I wasn't one of the egocentrist dorks. Or was I? Hmmm.... I definitely didn't have money!

I think it is people’s nature to think what we own defines us or defines the group of people that own it. We as a group tend to oversimplify other people’s personalities in the cars they drive the money they make and the clothes they wear. I think most of the people on hear know not all Ferrari owners are social Geniuses and not all Lambo, Corvette or whatever owners are Social misfits.

When really Egocentrical dorks are not limited to any one group of people. I have friends that make 20k a year that brag more about what they own than friends that make 500k a year.

I think most people think that in some way our things define who we are who our friends are who are significant other is, etc. When in fact it is our content of are conversation, our ability to make people laugh, and basically our ability to enjoy one others company that at the end, are the only deciding factors of our true relationships.

I think you could substitute any sports-type car for Ferrari in your post and talk about the character traits of those people in the same way (Subaru STi, Mustang, etc..). Unfortunately, most opinions are made from the road and not in a coffee shop, where it's possible that a Ferrari owner and a Mustang/Viper/Vette owner have more in common than not when it comes to love of cars, racing, etc… Can you imagine what some people are saying on the road when they have your Ferrari in their view? I do think another degree of responsibility read:modesty is required with Ferrari ownership. An observed double lane change without using your turn signal is different in a Ferrari than a mini van.

Can you ask some of those 'vette owners why they bought such an amazingly fast sportscar to only be driven at 5mph BELOW the speedlimit?
I don't think I have ever seen a 'vette do anything other than slow all the traffic down.
    Serious.

Well, not all Vette owners are alike. But, the one thing they have in common is the love of plastic parts :)

I used to have a little joke with myself. While talking to someone (with one) I'd try to guess whether or not he'd bring his car up in the discussion within the first 5 minutes. The subject was always the same: The guy who he dropped the "F Bomb" on to win some random, usually unrelated argument....

    It usually happened.

Same with Ivy Leage...alwasy mention their school within 5 min of discussion...rarely had anything to do with discussion too.
    ex:
Bill the salesguy in Worcester dealer: Hi Tom, nice to meet you. Are you interested in a new car?

Tom: We, yes, now that I am no longer living in the dorm and riding the "T" (quick reference to Boston subway) I think I will need a car.

Bill: (ignoring "T" comment) Well, now is a good time to be looking, lots of great deals out there!

Tom: Really? I don't know much about cars, never could have one when I was a student in Boston. (Recognizing that "T" was ignored, must now raise the bar to bring up city name.)

Bill: Oh, I'm sure there are nice cars in Boston. Parking probably limited though (insert friendly chuckle).

Tom: Oh yeah, no parking at Harvard ya know. That old saying about "pahk ya cah in hahvahd yahd." Is BS...no parking there for sure. (insert smug chuckle here).

Bill: Oh, I wouldn't know, sounds kind of funny though. (Ignoring Harvard remark.)

Tom: Listen you g*d-forsaken frickin moron @sswhipe! I went to F*cking Harvard and if you don't start recognizing my superiority I aint gonna buy this Toyota from you!

Bill: I went to MIT. Sucks in this economy doesn't it? What did you study there?

Tom: Now looks with horror as he begins having diarrhea run out the bottom of his pant leg.

    Exactly.

There are lots of jerks out there... it has nothing to do with the kind of car they drive. You could say the same about ANY car. BMW guys... Mercedes guys... Porsche guys... HECK, I've come across a lot of lunatics driving mini-vans.

You get jerkoffs with any possession that is considered to be special by that group of owners. They are more comical than annoying really, you almost have to try not to offend them. I don't get the Harley guys at all, though. Yeah, tough guy, that bandana and goatie totally makes up for your pot belly and man boobs, why don't you loan them to the menopausal minger flashing hers on the back of that POS.

A Ferrari or Lamborghini is a pretty darn cool car, perhaps some measure of aloofness is tolerated. With that said, I would wager the number of annoying doooshes that drive Prius far outnumber the ones that drive Ferrari.

    Ahh the old "H-Bomb"

Just remember the difference between Yalies and Cantabrigians is that Yalies wash their hands BEFORE going to the bathroom!

And unlike the Crimson, we all know that the Beavers don't wash at all!! <hehe>

Funny but kind of bad that the MIT dude though... :)

Back to topic. Non enthusiast poseurs are IMO the problem. Same thing happens with boats, bikes, planes, cars or any hobby/toy that can provide some sort of status. This attitude is by all means not Ferrari exclusive.

I guess I've been pretty lucky, everyones been great! At least to me in person anyway. They all know I'm poor anyway and one-uping me is no challange at all. Though I do fear of what is said in my absence sometimes. I can tend to be overly enthusiastic at times, I'm just so happy to be there and enjoy all the cars so much its hard to contain myself! But I think that shows the great charactor of the people I've met, allways making me feel welcome in spite of me being me. It was never that way in the street/hot rod circles!

    Cheers!

Holy crap! I thought I was the only person who noticed that! Its Bizarre. Its like there is an invisible forcefield that steps in as the speed limit approaches.
