Last September one of the Thunderbirds had a little run in with terra firma at an air show in Idaho and the pilot bailed out at the last second. The accident report was recently released which found pilot error was to blame. Here are a few pics I thought were interesting along with cockpit video.

Man....that's one lucky pilot.....what can often often happen is that the burst of hot air from the explosion either collapses the parachute or the pilot lands in the fireball on these low level ejections because he has no time or space to maneuver in. Look at the last photo. One of my clients was a CF-104 Starfighter pilot in Europe in the Canadian Air Force and he witnessed that happen to one of his squadron mates....the guy landed in the fireball.

A friend of mine was a fighter pilot in the Indian air force, he ejected twice. He said you have to sit back in your seat and press your spine against the seatback and tilt your head back as much as possible. if you don't, the G's of being ejected will break your neck or break your back. He said most pilots get some injuries even during a successful ejection. My friend unfortunately broke both legs when he landed, and it was the end of his flying time.
