Since I saw a thread on electric water pumps, it got me thinking that it might be good for my 348. Less drag, therefor more horsepower to rear wheels. Any thoughts or advice?

You would still need something in the timing belt setup to allow for the length of belt specified to work properly. It could be a hollow case with a bearing and roller. I like the idea, but worry about working on (and adding loads to) the electrical system of the 348.

    Clever idea.

BMW is now working on an alternator that has an electric clutch similar to an A/C compressor that cuts in only when needed!

So, an electric water pump makes sense.

Would this solve the problem of waterpump bearing freezing and new engine needed?

Yes, in effect it would be more similar to the 355 setup where the Timing belt does not drive the water pump.
