Hi - I have an F430 and the previous owner had a pair of ancillary speakers installed into the back shelves. I went to remove them and discovered that the exposed wires running to the speakers that were covered in electrical tape have left a fair bit of tape residue on the leather. What's my best bet to clean it off without damaging the leather?

I've read crazy things such as WD40, nail polish remover, goo gone, alcohol, etc. But don't feel comfortable with any of them.

You could try a specific leather cleaning product, like Griot's Garage leather care spray and see if that takes it off. It might take a few tries but it would be mild and safe enough to use on the leather. If that does not do it, then you may have to ramp up to either a mild or diluted citrus based cleaner or a specific adhesive remover, like 3M. Take it slow and good luck. ;)

Try goo gone on an inconspicuous spot, might work. If it leaves a stain, and it might, try a citrus based cleaner as Einsteiger has suggested.

Also consider the prep solution (pristine clean) that Leatherique sells. It's good at removing dirt without removing finish. Normally I'd suggest using the rejuvenator oil first, but not for this particular application.

Thanks - I think I'll give the 3M product a try. I've got some goo gone, but it specifically says not to use it on leather.

Have you ever tried the 3M all purpose cleaner and degreaser? I found it on their spec sheet when I was looking at the adhesive cleaner. The reason I ask is the all purpose says it's safe for leather. The adhesive cleaner doesn't say that it it's not, but doesn't specifically say it is...just curious.

I have not tried it, but if the label says safe for leather, I would try that first.

The leather cleaner I use is a light cut naphtha. I would try leather cleaner first. Maybe it's not the best solution for removing adhesives, at least it is save for leather.

Ordered the Leatherique kit and gave the Pristine Clean a shot tonight. It took some scrubbing, but it actually did a very nice job of getting the residue off. I was a little surprised that it worked as well as it did. I was expecting to spend some time fighting with it. If you can imagine the scuff marks black soled shoes make on a basketball court, that's about what I had on my leather - so it had ground in more than just the adhesive and was a pretty dense black goo I was dealing with.

As a side note, I also contacted 3M about their 2 products mentioned in the thread. I was surprised at their response; which was to try warm water and a soft cloth (like I hadn't thought of that).

Great feedback. Glad that worked out. I need to replenish my Leatherique inventory as well.
