Maybe I'm a bit slow, but for >30 years I have been using my mirrors incorrectly. I took my 2 eldest daughters to the Audi Driving School at Road Atlanta and I quietly sat in the back of the classes during the didactic sessions. One thing the instructor taught them was that the left mirror should be tilted out about 15 or 20 degrees farther than most people place it. They taught the students to put their heads very close to the window and set the outside mirror to look straight back in that position. This automatically tilted it out about 20 degrees. Of course I was taught by my Dad and the High School instructors to get in the car and adjust all mirrors where they look straight back, showing as close to the same picture as possible. I think most people do this as it was what their dads taught them. I bet it's the way you do it too. But the problem is, if you do it that way you have a big blind spot at your left rear quarter panel. If you tilt the mirror out farther this blind spot can be totally eliminated. Seriously. The first time I tried it, I hated it, I felt it was weird having my left mirror tilted so far out. I was use to seeing about the same scene in my inside mirror and outside mirror, 30 years will do that to you. And, importantly, I felt uneasy because I simply did not trust a single mirror and liked having 2 that I would shift between to confirm what was back there. This, I found was the biggest obstacle to tilting the mirror out, the mis-trust of the mirrors. But I now realize THE REASON I MISTRUSTED THE MIRRORS IS BECAUSE THERE IS A BLIND SPOT!!! Once I realized that my inside mirror did not lie, and that I could overlap it slightly with the side mirror and in this position eliminate the blind spot I became a believer. The Audi instructor was right. If I wanted to look straight back,I just put my head near the window and I could see straight back just like if the mirror was in Dad's position. I had this life long habit of putting the side mirror in a position where I could see a little sliver of the side of my car. I did this because I didn't want anybody to able to sneak in on me. I never realized that my thinking was 180 degrees off! That by seeing the side of my car I was CREATING the blind spot. So, If you tilt the mirror out a little and fiddle with it as cars pass you , you can find the sweet spot where they are in the inside mirror overlapping a little with the side mirror, and in the side mirror until the exact time you can catch them in you peripheral vision. No more blind spot. Amazing. I think that elimination the blind spot is a great trade off to the redundant view we were all taught as teenagers by well meaning Dads and High School instructors. It takes some getting use to, as seems really odd at first but it is worth the effort. ---Don't tell me to use one of those little curved mirrors. They are for Astro vans. ---Still do a head check as really short vehicles like motorcycles can still find a 6 foot blind spot. uro, quit all the babling, where there any hot chicks in your class ???? did you drop your pencil only to look up chicks dresses ? any fake cans in class ? did you score with the teacher ?? did you get spanked for being a naughty boy ?? did you have to stand in the corner ? because you were a naughty boy ????
Hey John, stop being mean to ole Uro! You're spoiling his valuable message here! Actually, I'm not kidding. What he's saying is true and most drivers need to learn this stuff. Sedan racers already understand this, but most people have been taught this $hitty outdated material from the 50s. Remember 10 and 2? That went out in the 50s, too.
i thought kitty was just killing time out of his retirement. my bad. ps, that pic really is kittyfishsticks in class.
Actually nice post - and something I preach to whomever car I am in. I got mine from the Porche Driving school back in the early 90's. Technically - you should not be able to see the back of your car in either mirror. To test positioning - while driving on a 3 lane highway (for example) - you should be able to fully track a car coming from any lane - first in your rearview, second in your side mirror - when the car leaves the side mirror it should be directly in your vision just to your left or right (depending on which lane you are tracking.) Once you are used to it - you cannot drive any other way. I think my instructors words were - why do you need to see the back of your car?... You know where it is - it is the other cars which you don't know where they are.
On my 328, the passenger mirror is not convex -- unlike dang near everything else out there. I've had it positioned much farther 'out' since I bought the car. Feels strange at first, because the reference position of the rear quarter isn't visible. I don't have a blind spot.
Franco: And now my friend, the first-a rule of Italian driving. [Franco rips off his rear-view mirror and throws it out of the car] Franco: What's-a behind me is not important. But, if you had a Ferrari, you'd already know that
What I do is with the car parked, make it so there is no overlap between the 3 mirrors. Each one picks up exactly where the other one is left off. For example, looking at an big sign with the rearview, pick up the letters/graphic where it cuts off with both the right and left mirrors. This pretty much eliminates the blindspots. I get so used to it that I HATE driving without my mirrors like this. It really makes me uncomfortable in other's cars and annoys the hell out of me when people drive my car and mess with them.
I was told the same thing, but with the right mirror too. Lean your head near the center of the car and have someone adjust the right mirror so you can see a sliver of your vehicle. Then sit back in your seat normally. Has the same affect on the right side too. Just my $.015
I'm still confused, probably cause I've taken that "have a glass of wine everyday" advice too seriously.....can someone just explain this to me in simple terms? Put my head where and adjust the mirrors how????
Don't abstain from sex for longer then 3 days and don't look at hot woman within 10 minutes from snapping one off?
Steve, the way I understand it is that in the drivers seat, tilt your head to the left so that it almost touches the window. Adjust your mirror so that you cannot see the side of your car. This is the proper mirror adjustment. For the passenger side mirror, tilt your head the same distance to the right and adjust your passenger mirror in the same fashion. This should eliminate the blind spot. If your mirrors are properly set then anything not in your rearview mirror should be located in the side mirrors. If a car is beside you and not in your side mirrors, then it should be directly beside you out of your blind spot. Like I said, just the way I understand it. I've been using this method for years and it has saved me on more than one occasion - now I wish I could convince my friends/family to follow suit. Andrew
I added one of those stick-on convex mirrors to my passenger side mirror, sorry. I use traffic to adjust my mirrors, when I first get a vehicle. I live near the interstate, so I will go out there when it is bumper to bumper traffic and drive from "my exit" to the one a mile away in my same town. When traffic is moving 2mph, it gives me an opportunity to rotate my head, locate a vehicle two cars behind and one lane to the right of me and to adjust as I allow him to catch up. Anytime I find myself stuck in traffic I use the opportunity to check my mirrors' adjustment.
Uro, if yo usearch, a myself and a few others have been trying to push people to use this method for years. It really does work (althogh one shoul dnever get out of the habit of checking over your shoulder, and nothing is a substitute for situational awareness), and will make you a safer driver. --Dan
Ever make a right turn lane change in a TR? You'll know what I mean. Those mini convex mirrors work wonders. They look stupid as can be, but are a good 'secondary' safe measure in veiwing blind spots.
Re-adjusted the mirrors to URO settings this AM. After about 30 minutes, got used to it. BIG IMPROVEMENT. I was drving like a lane switching maniac within the 1st half hour. Who knows, tomorrow, if I drive AFTER THE SUN COMES UP, it may work even better. DM
You don't need to move your head anywhere to do this. Sit like you normally would and drive slowly through a parking lot. When an object leaves your windshield mounted mirror, it should then be picked up by your door mounted mirror. If you can see the object in both mirrors at the same time, move the door mirror further out.
Readjusted my mirrors yesterday and them proceeded to drive over 110 miles... After about 20, I completely got used to it. Before I had to turn my head all the time because of the huge blind spot on my car. Now, if there is a car there, it shows smack in the middle of my door mirror. I still do an over the shoulder from time to time but not as often. It works great!
