Well I have had my 2004 F360 for about two months now. Yesterday while on a drive I had to stop behind a recycling truck for a couple of minutes. The car downshifted to 1st gear as it always does but, after a while it shifted itself into neutral. I could not get it to shift back into 1st gear. I up shifted, down shifted, pulled back on both paddles and it would not engage. By this time traffic had begun to build up behind me. Of course everyone got a kick out of it as they went around me. As I became more embarrassed, I was able to get the car into reverse, was able to back up and then up shift to first with no problem and finish my drive. This is the second instance of this happening to me. Fortunately no one was behind me the first time. Tha car runs and sounds fine. Has anyone had this happe? Are these f1 transmissions just quirky? Or is there something else I'm doin wrong. Either way, it's not as fun at the stop lights when I'm worried it won't go. Amazing how people think its funny when they see someone with a nice car that seems to be in trouble!!!!

Haters always get a kick out of chances to hate people with nice things. Do you know the condition of your clutch? Seems like it might be a good thing to check and it may need replacing. Since your car is so new to you, maybe you already know the clutch condition.

    Just a thought.

Did you hear a short beep prior to it shifting into neutral?

I don;t have a technical explaination, but whenever something a little quirky happens with mine, just like a computer, I turn it off and restart it, first with the ignition key - as perhaps you could have when stuck behind the truck. If this doesn;t work, turn the master switch off under the hood and wait 10 minutes, then turn it on again, wait 10 minutes, this resets all things software. It atleast eliminates any software issue you may have. Of course it won;t help if it is something mechanical - good luck mate

I can't recall hearing a beep. I did hear it switch into neutral. There may have been a beep but I didn't notice.

My car will switch automatically into neutral if when stopped I don't exert enough foot pressure on the brake pedal. I just noticed that it will also switch to neutral if I try to move it with the door open. The warning beep is pretty attention getting, especially the first time it happens.

No, I didn't, just pressed harder on the brake pedal and re-engaged first. I feel for you on the embarassing part. I checked the oil the other day and must have got a drop on the exhaust area. A short time later while driving I noticed a little smoke coming from the engine cover and pulled over to check. I was only there for a minute, but you should have heard the cat calls, laughter & horn honking. Geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

If you are stopped and your foot isn't on the brake, it will shift into neutral automatically (and beep at the same time) after about 15s (there is a specific number documented in the manual). You have to depress the brake to shift out of neutral once it has done this.

Was your foot on the brake?

Yeah, you've got to have your foot on the brake otherwise you won't be able to shift from N into first.

Also, and depending upon how your brake switch is adjusted, you might have to press a bit harder on the brake. This always works for me.

I picked up my 360 from the dealer and started the drive home. At traffic lights i had my foot off the brake. Now I know that the car will automatically move to neutral after ~ 30 secs. I didn't know what to do...so turned the car off/on.

If you're at a standstill, with your foot off the brake (or even lightly on it) the car will shift to neutral. Cure...press on the brake harder and 'paddle' to 1st.

    ..yes..embarassing!!

Yep, foot needs to be on the brake to shift from N to 1, as well as to start the car ;).

No worries, experiences like this are what make driving the thing an "expeirence" and not just a commute. You'll get the hang of it!

ETA: The only time I've ever noticed my car shift to N from 1 automatically was in a traffic jam when I did not move for several minutes. Defantely not just seconds, and it beeped loudly to let me know it did this.

Just upgrade to the CS TCU as everyone with a 360 should, faster shifts, earlier bite, longer clutch life, doesn't switch to neutral at rest, lovely! Best upgrade you can do in my opinion (next to the exhaust).

Foot needs to be on the break when shifting into 1st. Secondly, when at standstill put the car into neutral. Thirdly, next time it happens, engage reverse and then go straight to 1st from there and it will select the gear. The cars tend to screw up on selecting 1st when the clutch is hot. You just need to get the clutch slippage adjusted.

Had a similar problem with my 430s today....3 times!!

Get in the car after lunch...start it...release brake....and on the speedo screen there is a light that looks like the back end of the car with lid open.....and screen under gear screen flashes "SLOW DOWN"...WTF?....wont go in 1st....so I put it in R...then 1st and all is well.

A while later in my drive, happened twice, coming to a stop (both in 2nd and 3rd while letting the car downshift itself) the same SLOW DOWN sign is flashing and car goes into N...I wait a second....shift into 1st and drive off.

    Anyone experience this ?
