Hi Guys, this is coming to you from the roadside in Esk main street - with a large puddle of oil under the 308 passenger rear wheel -RACQ is on their way but I thought I'd ask advice here... I just got back the car back last week from replacing the housing, gasket and oil line that runs into the left hand end of the front bank.
There was no leak when I left Stanthorpe this morning. My first thought is the clamps not being tight enough but the it looks more like the oil has splashed UP from lower down? Any (polite) suggestions?

Given someone has just been working in that area you would think so.
Oil cooler is in that area too.

Thanks, cooler is all dry... RAcQ arrived and thinks the nuts on the new housing need retensioning - topped up oil and heading to mechanic in Tooggolawah.

I'd like to help, but you lost me at "polite" :p. Hopefully you find something simple that can be kludged together to get you home. Otherwise it's a tow to Marc's or (the horror!) the dealer in Brissy, if you can't get it to Caboolture. Let us know what you find, so we can all nod sagely and say "I thought it was that"

Thanks everyone - home safe. Put 1/2 litre oil in at Esk and checked all OK at Kilcoy and then a cool run home. Still seems to be a slight weep around the new housing gasket; the guys have inadvertently put 5W40 Penrite oil in and it was a very hot day on the long run across the plains from Warwick to Esk... back to the workshop on Tues...

I was going to change mine to 10 W 60...I am running Fuchs 5W40 at the moment but feel it's far too thin for an old engine in the summer.....

Sounds like a line coming off the oil cooler to me.

The other much less likely possibility is the oil vapor scavenger canister or line.

    Good luck.

I've Been running Fuchs 10W/60 in the 550 and 360 Adrian and will switch the 355 and 308 to the same....5W/40 seems too thin for our temperatures in Sydney....

how many times do I have to say it - don't use Penrite oil! Just ask any serious race engine builder.

It seems ok,mind you the exhaust tips are a bit cokey but for now I’m putting it down to the cruising with Seela,I really like seeing them a nice light bronze colour so I’m really making an effort to thrash it on my own when I get the chance it really helps the car run well

Thickness does not equal lubrication. A 60W might retain 40W viscosity at extreme temperatures, but unless you're in the habit of driving around with the temp needle in the red zone, you don't need it.

An engine designed for 40W tolerances will not be properly lubricated for cold starts if you run 10W60, even at 30+ degree ambient temperature. All your cars had a factory recommendation of 40W oil. When FMS put 10W60 in my 575, the oil pressure relief valve opened instantly on start up - that's not what you want.

You are much better off with a 5W50 than a 10W60.

it's the "first fill" for the Porsche factory. I don't think you can question that.

But doesn't Ferrari recommend 10W60 for our climate now in its new directive?...This oil thing is so confusing as everyone you speak to has a different idea....Do you run mobile one 5w50 in the 575?...

Both my water and oil hang at around the second mark on the gauges (10 o’clock) all day seems ok oil pressure is around midway at 4 thou, mind you I think I’m due for a new oil pressure sensor

Ferrari recommend Shell oil because of the F1 sponsorship, not because it's the best quality oil.

My guess is that they had some engine bearing failures in middle east markets, where summer ambient temperatures are 50 degrees and above. So now, any "hot" market is recommended to use 60W oil. But our climate is little different to Italy, where they don't recommend 10W60, so go figure.

Right now I have Redline 5W40 in the 575, but usually I run M1 5W40. I do an annual change and usually the only long trips I do are between April (GAD) and July (GG), so I plan for cold starts from very low overnight temperatures.

80% of wear happens at startup.

Your mechanic should be able to connect a mechanical pressure guage (by removing the existing oil pressure sender from the engine) to check your actual pressure.

It's normal for pressure to drop as bearings wear. When the needle drops to zero at idle, you need to think seriously about an engine rebuild. :)
