It's an interesting place to visit because the underground mine is virtually in the centre of town. Because it's been operational for so long (pre 1930s - Pap can you fill in the date, please) an actual town grew up around the mine. Completely different from the mining 'camps' of today.

Where is anyone complaining about silver, lead or zinc mining in Aus? There's also no issue with coking coal mining since there is no alternative for steel making (afaik). The issue with thermal coal isn't the mining so much, but the resultant pollution; fracking is a whole different ballgame.
