2004 BMW 325 xi, 60,000 miles, WAS running great Took it to Jiffy Lube, where I have always taken my cars. I saw them change the oil filter which is topside, and add 6.9 quarts of oil. No problems from what I can see. I got in the car to fire it up, and the check engine light is on, and the check transmission light is on I have never seen the trans light on before. I asked the guy to verify that they changed/drained the right fluid. The oil level dipstick is right at the middle. The Automatic trans fluid dipstick is right at the middle Yet, the car drives like crap and limped home. Read the codes for the check engine light and it was p0102, or MAF sensor??? The reader didn't pick up anything about the transmission. It is shifting rough, and doesn't feel like its downshifting. I know coincidences happen. And I am willing to chalk it up to that. Put then there is the other possibility: Could they have screwed something up?! I would think that if they drained the ATF fluid, and added 7 quarts of oil, the motor would be way overfilled and smoking like crazy. Plus, the ATF level and oil level seem fine. Any thoughts on anything else I should check?! Bo
MAF is mass airflow sensor. Can be cleaned with MAF cleaner. CRC 05110 Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner - 11 Wt Oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive or replaced: Amazon.com: New BMW Mass Air Flow Sensor Meter 99 - 06 2.5L 2.8L 5WK9605 325 323 Z3 528: Car Electronics maybe this part, but either way looks to be under $100 and an easy fix. could be unplugged when they were working under the hood? Or a crimped, broken wire? D
Figured it out... The jiffy lube place left the maf sensor unplugged... That set off all of the dash lights and transmission light... Glad it was simple. Just took 2 hours out of my life to figure out another persons screw up. These places used to be staffed by responsible people, now, it's high school drop outs... Sad. Bo
Sucks, but it happens. Just be happy they left the MAF unplugged and not the drain plug out. Seen that too. We all make mistakes, but they shouldn't have let you leave without checking it over.
Sorry I did not see this thread yesterday as I did that once myself on my 2002 e46 when I took the MAF out to clean it and missed getting it plugged back in. The exact same thing happened with the hard shifts, the limp mode, warning lights, etc. Scared the crap out of me since the symptoms are pretty awful. That being said, there is no reason for the e46 MAF sensor to have been unplugged for a Jiffy Lube service. Don't need to do that even to get the air filter out to do their inspection unless they went way overboard and completely unhooked the airbox lid and MAF from the intake hose.
It happens all the time when they try and check air filters. Just to note, your BMW does not have a transmission dipstick. Most likely the fluid you were checking was the power steering, which does use Dexron III ATF as its fluid.
