I'm looking at several early carbed 308's in Southern California this weekend. Apparently, California doesn't exempt classic carburated cars from their strict smog control. Those poor cars have to be tuned and retuned to meet emissions testing or else just sit without proper registration.

What is the exact law regarding emission exemption in Texas. Specifically, what years carburated 308's are exempt? Also, do you need to file a special petition with DMV to be exempt when you first title and register the car in this state, or are you just automatically exempt from emission testing when you bring your car for yearly inspection just based on age of vehicle?

What are the laws in other states? Is California the only state where the carbed Ferraris are held to the common standard?

I know historically with the Pantera guys out in CA, anything 73 and older was exempt from emissions (I think TX modeled their laws after CA). I definitely know that there were guys that would take their 74's, look at the build date on the car, and if it was actually a 73 build date, would get it retitled--legally. CA is bureaucracy hell, so who knows what it currently is.

Then there are the states that don't have inspection stickers, or emissions laws, like Oklahoma (I think Tennessee too). FYI, Oklahoma mails your tag dues to you each year, doesn't matter if the address it's mailed to isn't in Oklahoma. They'll mail the updated tag sticker to that address too. Why do you think you see so many big trucks (Peterbilts and the like) and trailers, running OK tags? Cheap isn't the only reason...

My 1964 330 doesn't have to pass emissions, but I don't know if there's a specific cutoff year.

Thanks Tillman. Sounds like all vehicles over 24 years old don't worry about it. So all pre 1980 Ferraris are exempt in Texas, which is perfect for the carburated cars. By the way, I read somewhere that the carbed Ferraris prior to catalytic converters (pre 1978) were designed to run on leaded gasoline as this boosted octane rating for richer mixture and higher compression ratio at expense of bad exhaust. Do you guys know anything about this? I hope unleaded gasoline isn't harmful for their engine, right?

I was "catching up" with the gf there gentlemen.........

Roses on the dining room table.........warm bubble bath drawn, as she came in off the long road home....soft candlelight.....warm food waiting .....Lyle Lovett tickets at the Hobby Center.....house was spotless from two weeks of empty beer bottles, car magazines, Surfer's Journals....you know, that stuff. ;)

Good thing that rainstorm hid her filthy dirty New Beetle Turbo S, I was running out of time.......

Oh yea, in Texas, at 25 years old you are off the hook....period.....no emissions testing AT ALL. Drive in, check the horns, lights, and tires, and it's twelve bucks out the door!

    Sorry for the .....ahem........delay......

Yep my Ferrari & Maserati are both exempt. On the other hand my daily driver FIAT was a bit of an issue last year. I ended up running ethanol on that one to pass. Three more years of ethanol on that one.

The other thing is with no sniffing it's much cheaper for inspection.
