Changed battery and then went for emission test on my 1997 F355. HC failed. I hear that you need to drive / start a number of times to reset codes before it would pass. Is that correct and if so how much should I drive.

    Disconnect.

    Reconnect.

    Turn off A/C, radio etc.

Re-start and let idle until fans kick in.

Go and get your emission test.

This should let the ECU relearn the parameters of your car.

I'd also take the car to emissions after it's been warmed up.

Changing the battery will not reset the P codes or settings for a emmission check through the OBDII port. It sounds like you got a "sniffer" test at the tail pipe if they are saying your HC is too high. You may have a "miss" in the ignition or something that is causing that. You may want a specialist to look at your car more closely.

Ran a test for codes and the mechanic said everything was fine. Changed all the spark plugs and passed the emission test. I also requested for a compression test and the results are strange. 175 in all the cylinders except 2 and 7. They both came out at 25. After a wet test, one of them climbed to 90 and the other stayed at 25.

However all the missing and roughness has disappeared and the change of spark plugs has had a phenomenal improvement in drivability.

Am I looking at an error or $$$$. If the two cylinders are actually as bad as is claimed, can I continue driving the car, assuming I am happy with the level of performance. I am just a regular street driver.

On another note, all the gears pull well except there seems to be some hesitation or slippage after 4000 rpm only on the 4th. 3rd and 5th seem fine.

    Cheers
