i know this sounds sacrilegious but christmas eve afternoon, i had an hour to kill, and the kids were watching some harry potter thing and the wife was occupying the kitchen so i could not begin on dinner.....so naturally i decided to take a drive.

the 512bbi had not been out in a while, so grabbed those keys and went out to the garage to wake the old girl up.

no disappointment. started right up, and burbled along for a few minutes warm up. then i edged it out and started on my usual 1 hour loop. and surprise, there was hardly anybody out on the road ! great time to go out. once again, i was amazed at the tractability and power of this car. ok, i have had mine completely restored and it breathes easy and puts out a few more horses than stock. it pulls nicely in every gear, the sound is great, and the presence is epic class - i just loved it. and then to top it all off, i needed gas and while pumping i had a couple guys come over to talk cars - turned out they were ferrari owners too so it was a nice impromptu meeting.

so, if you wont get in too much trouble, take advantage of the empty roads during the holidays and take a real cruise !

15C and sunny yesterday in Germany as well. No way to resist the Autobahn for me either :) Nice story. Glad the BBi was ready for the small adventure!

Following Ross's advice, as I always do, I went for a drive on the empty S. California roads today, really nice except for the car upside down on a straight street in Old Town. I asked the police how someone could turn a car upside down on a straight street at low speeds-"texting" was the answer.
I stopped in Wind and Sea and took a shot close to the PumpHouse from "The Pumphouse Gang", and drove home. A nice run on deserted roads.
    Wont last long though.

Good idea as the roads here are also mostly deserted today. it's been a while since I had the hot rod BB out on the open roads. As per the norm.....pump the go pedal 5 times to prime....5 fire then 7 or 8......stall.......re-start a couple of more times to get all 12 running. I love the way the BB fills the garage with start up smoke. Engine smoothed out, warmed up and off we went. Nothing like the induction roar emanating from the Boxer engine. Had it up to 140 on an empty road and the car just hunkers down. The BB is one uncivilized beast. Love it.

Interesting how several of us have similar habits. We have Christmas dinner on Christmas eve, open presents late on Christmas day, and go our for Chinese because THEY ARE OPEN.
I spent abut six hours cleaning the leather on the Daytona-turns out a lot of that
patina" was just plain old dirt.

    Good day All,

You guys are killing me... it was -29C here in Western Canada overnight...enough to cause the X5's transmission to go into "Fail Safe" mode and so it just limps along (it does this when temps go below -25C)... arghh... Well, I am glad that some are enjoying great weather :)

    Cheers,

    Sam

I did start my 512BB the other day, but I chickened out the drive..

Anyway, only real Ferraris smoke on start up. So trade in the BBi on a carb car.

All kidding aside, after the complete rebuild with JE pistons etc. the smoke on start up is minimal and the oil consumption as almost 1/2 litre for whole summer.
    This is after a 3k break-in period,

    Bonjour Claude,

Yikes... and I thought it was just out here that the weather is nasty ... Although yesterday it was a balmy -17C :)

I wish you warmer temps in the New Year :)

    Cheers,

it was warm and sunny this sunday afternoon so i took my own advice and got the cover off the 512tr and took it for a spin. i did have to jumpstart it coz i had left it since october. but once i got it going she purred as usual and we went for a spin. took my son with me this time and it was good to just cruise with him - its his favorite since i bought it about the time he was born and it was the first car he recognized.
the 512tr is still an epic car imo. tremendous presence and powerful. it was turning heads on our drive like it was new - not bad for a 21 year old car !

Could not drive yet; she is still on her blocks, waiting for her refurbished calipers .....

But started her up and let her growl 15 minutes ... all meters showed "warm" ...

After a few minutes the "smoke" was away .. and I suppose all the moist also ...

I think it is not bad for the engine to run every once and a while during winter ...
