I was reading F1 live and it said that the Ferrari sponsors are trying to get around the rules by using a disguied livery this season. Now I know that alot of countries have laws against tobacco advertising, but is now to where we won't see Marlboro on the car at any race this season?

I read a brilliant editorial in "European car" magazine about tobacco sponsoring in F1: I believe the issue is, that starting this year tobacco sponsoring is banned in all of F1. So it is no longer a country issue anymore.

Anyhow, the editor of the article makes a brilliant point: He laments the loss of tobacco sponsoring, because it simply is a part of F1 attraction of the hot jocks living their lives in the fast and dangerous lane. James Hunt with a cigarette in his mouth belongs to F1 much more than modern sponsorships for cell phones and the like. I couldn't agree more. And no I don't smoke.

Yes, All cigarette advertising is banned as of 2007. However, the teams are still allowed to display branding colours and shapes, ie Marlboro red and the red chevron logo with black bars resembling the lettering.

Good comment, I agree with the fact that cigarette smoking belongs to F1 as a symbol of rebellion and haste, however this is the end all reason to why tobacco companies have taken that image and successfully started a legacy of smokers emulating their "heroes" for those very reasons.

I smoke (preferably Marlboro's Lights) and I think its very "cool". :D

Frankly I think the whole thing is stupid... banning cigarett ads... you cant advertize tobaco??? we have much better things to do than that...

I dont smoke, and hate it, but really there comes a point when people have to take responsibility for themselves and their kids... smoking bad - yes, so dont do it, but if Marlboro wants to spend a $billion sponsoring Ferrari... let them.. its never made me want to smoke!

I never understood, why ban tobacco adverts but not booze. How many people a year die from smoking and driving a year? Pretty f-ing stupid....

True, but there are probably 10,000,000 people that die across the world yearly due to smoking related causes.

The big numbers show that cigarettes are a bigger killer than alcohol.

I think they should ban gas/oil companies from sponsoring F1, let them save the money and lower the price at the gas pumps!!!!!!!... a&&holes!!!

Tobacco advertising doesn't create smokers but rather gets smokers to switch to the advertised brand.

What % of the 10 million is caused by smog or any other air problems. You never see or hear a report about that. You hear clean air all the times but never what illnesses it causes or the number of deaths.

As far as smoking is concern, you do not have to smoke. You do have to breath the bad air.

The cig is a legal product the last time I check. They should be able to advertise the way they seem fit.

Just another case of big brother knows best. Most of the time I do not think so....

I hate cigarette smoke! really ****ing hate it! Stopped going to bars in Boston years ago cause I hated it so much. However, I have always found it insulting that the government doesn't seem to think we have the ability to make our own decisions when it comes to smoking. We should live in a free market and as consumers we govern what is successful and whats not. If excessive cell phone use is found to cause brain cancer should we ban all the Cellular providers from advertising in F1.

I can understand smoking and alcohol advertising bans in children's oriented media, but this is F1, not Nick's Kids Choice Awards. Its an incredibly dangerous sport and the potential for seeing something far more horrible than cigarette advertising exists every time we tune in on sunday.

    Just my thoughts-

The government won't ban smoking. It brings in too much tax revenue.

All this posturing is just politically correct BS.

No. I don't smoke and I don't chew. And I don't go with girls that do.

i think it's pointless...if u wanna smoke, go ahead and smoke, if u don't want, then don;t do it.

it's not like smoking Marlboros will make u as fast as Schumi, or Mild Seven, and u'll grow FA's 'brows...

#1: Weak argument. There is zero doubt that smoking causes cancer.

#2: When is the last time you saw a Jack Daniels advert on television? Such sensorship is nothing new. Governments have the right to ban such advertising especially since many of these governments (especially the Europeans with socialized healthcare) have to pay for the health fallout from smoking.

I am not in favor of this banned advertising by the way. As someone said, people should take responsibility for themselves. BUT, the respective governments at issue here have every right to ban such advertising and every reason ($$) to want to ban such advertising and that is why they are doing it.

Actually there are still Jack Daniel's ads on TV. Not for the whisky but for the beer like crap they push now. Rememeber the J/D commercials with Matt Kenseth from NASCAR? Talk about subliminal adverts, you see the beer stuff but you think the whiskey. Booze adverts are just as bad as tobacco. There is no logical reason why one should be banned and not the other.

    lol!

Look at Flavio Briatore, after he started smoking Mild Sevens with the Benetton team, Heidi Klum dumped him, and he turned into a fat lard.

A fat lard that got with Heidi....not bad....

One of my friends said that he heard that one of Marlboro's contingency plans is to buy out all of the subagreements that they have with other sponsors (they have the principal agreement for the whole space of the car and sell space to other sponsors such as Alice and Bridgestone etc.) and will just run the car solid red with no sponsorships of any kind on the car. And the hysteria and chatter that would come from the bare red car would be advertising itself. If true, I think that would be so cool just to see a plain red Ferrari Formula 1 Car. And it would probably be effective advertising. The plain red car would be like the old days... I hope its true.

That would be great, not only would the car look very clean, but it would be great advertising for Marlboro and Ferrari over the controversy so everyone would be happy.

Just imagine the black nose is red.

Next up will be a ban on cell phone ads - too many wrecks caused by folks not paying attention while talking and driving.

As far as your comment about gas prices - I continue to ask - where were you in 1998 when oil was $10.00/bbl and gas was cheap, and oil drillers were plugging holes right and left because it cost more to bring up the oil than they made on the market with it ?
