okay i have a problem, i have some extended family members who will remain unamed that continue to access some very twisted groups and sites on my "family's computer". i have tried using the filters set by the blockers and such but becouse it is accessed through yahoo i can't filter it out. i don't need this stuff on my computer where my kids can get to it.
the person resonsible dosn't know i have been logging and tracking thier movement, i also don't at this time want a confrontation. but would like a little more control back in my court.

    any ideas?

i purchased stompsofts x-treme software only for it not to load or work.
OS is windows xp media center sp2. yah i know it's got problems...

You should be able to go the Options section within your browser and list what sites are acceptable and what sites are not... Accessing unacceptable sites would require a password... i set that up on a computer in my former employer's home and it worked pretty well... Some stuff might slip through depending on how you set it up, but if you make all the sites your kids access acceptable and make EVERYTHING else unacceptable, that will make things a bit difficult for other folks...

So... what "twisted" groups are we talking about here...? :)

okay i have it set up that already and use the daily log to input into unacceptal sites however, these sites are links from adult yahoo groups. i can't block access to the adult yahoo group for some strange reason. the pics posted and info shared within the group passes through with out a problem. if i set the screen to block unrated sites then you can;t go anywhere- thats very annoying!.

if you really want to knwo it has to do with transexual bondage and hardcore S&M, some of it looks like child porn also but i can't be sure becouse it makes me sick to look at people getting the everloving crap beat out of thier gentalia and mocked killed for some kind of pleasure.

look i'm no prude and the occasional NWS link or nudie girl isn't the issue, it's the hardcore boardering on prison time stuff that gets my blood boiling. i don't need it and i don't want it! especially in my house. the person in question is older than i and can make thier own choices but respect my policies. which i have clearly stated and have been told when i hinted at it once "i haven't a clue it's not me".
see now i'm getting all pissed off.......

Find some reported cases on the internet showing how people go to prison for their curiosity and email them to them.

I would suggest changing the locks on your house.

And kindly tell your "extended family":

"Nothing personal...but I can't afford the risks to me and my family resulting from your internet surfing. Best of luck to you."

    Put this HOSTS file in:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\

If you already have a hosts file, open it with notepad and add this:

    127.0.0.1 groups.yahoo.com

Make sure to remove the READ ONLY attribute from the file prior to editing the file.

When you are done editing the file, make sure to replace the READ ONLY attribute on the HOSTS file.

This will stop them, unless they are clever and know what a HOSTS file is.

Also, Yahoo Groups can send files via EMAIL at mail.yahoo.com. The second hosts file I put in will NERF all access to Yahoo Email, too. The first file just removes access to the groups themselves. I will work on a hosts file that blocks all international Yahoo groups if you want.

OR...if you are editing an existing hosts file, just put this in:

    127.0.0.1 mail.yahoo.com

Nope. Things will work fine. It's just a text file Windows reads to see if it needs to block access to sites. Works across all browsers installed on the machine.

UK hosts coming up in a few.

Dude, like Darth said, stuff like that will get your door kicked in... i would think that, with the possbility of being arrested (it is YOUR computer), confrontation would be the EASIEST choice in this situation... If there's the possibility of kiddie porn, dude, you need to be as confrontational as you possibly can...

Does this individual live in your house...? How old are your children...? When this person visits, is any time they spend with your children supervised...? If this person does not live in your house, why not just set up a BIOS password on the computer and shut if off when they come over... If they try to use it and ask for the password, tell them the computer is off limits and leave it at that... If they start up or get nasty, you go ahead and break it down... Good luck, dude...

Nah...not missing anything. An empty hosts file will just have 127.0.0.1

    Add this or download mine.

127.0.0.1 localhost (don't add this line if it already has this at the top)

    127.0.0.1 groups.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 uk.groups.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 uk.mail.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 mail.yahoo.com

The only one you need to edit is in the system32/drivers/etc folder.

okay, they are here temporary they leave on monday 1 day to go. i have passwords on all accounts except the guest accont which is severly limited. the person resbonsible is someone you'd never expect and the info leakage would cause alot of commotion. i know my faimilys safety is more important but i can not verify if any of it is acutually illeagal. it just boarders on really perverse. i never been in this type of situation before, half of me wants to beat the crap out of them and the other half just whish's i never knew. and yes this poses a strange relationship with my kids, i now wonder are they a threat? or is it just thier closed closet fetish?

when i first set up the accounts with passwords the protest from the offending party was very funny.

Here's an idea! Tell your extended family member that he is a total creep, he's looking at perverted sites and he's not gonna use your computer again. Ever. Period. Then kick the creep out of the house.

Edit: Well, unless, of course, it's your mum.

I never let anyone use my computer. Everytime I did, I got it back infected with viruses and spyware and changed homepage and blablabla.

Why not just fookin up their internet setup? No more internet, no more problem. And when she asks why internet doesn't work, just find a good excuse like "oh yeah, my account doesn't work neither, it must be an alien attack". Or just have some leather dildo with spikes mailed with a little anonymous message "I thought that would complement the Yahoo group". Bonus if the "guilty" is a guy! hahaha

Wow, that's a tough one. I'm sure it's not the first time this kind of thing has happened. I'd place a password on the puter and then if they are bold enough to ask why then tell them that it's off limits because it has been infected by access to "yahoo groups porn sites" and leave it at that.

make sure you edit the file that is simply named "hosts"

There is also a file that may look identical, but is actually called "hosts.sam"

The second one is a sample file and is not read by windows.

Confront him privately. If he's stupid enough for you to find out hes been on the sites (internet options - clear cookies + temp files + history makes many people think that everything is ok). If hes smart, he won't do it again and not tell anyone because of fear of embarassement.

Also, throw the bed he has been sleeping on in the trash ;)
