Hello friends. Spent the morning detailing my 308's dry sump engine and the engine bay. My cam covers and cam belt shields are wrinkle black and they look GREAT with a silicone treatment. They match the aircleaner box and the oil tank. My engine also has all new hoses and they look great too. It doesn't have the red silicone plug wire shields but rather, just black 7mm wires passing through round looms. I brightened up the aluminum bits with fine ScotchBrite and coated the surfaces with silicone dressing. Belts are left clean but undressed. I then saw to all maintenance details. A clean engine is a treat to maintain.

So tell us YOUR detailing tricks.

Spray it down with WD-40 and find a dirt road? Details all those persistant lil oil leaks really nice!

When I get to it, I like to spray everything down with mineral spirits, wash away oil residues, dirt etc., leaves everything clean. I also like plain old soap and water, blow it off with air.... I do find myself more and more using silicone carefully, as well as wax, and it really is a treat to have that clean engine and engine compartment.

I drove about 100 miles in rain last fall, and then on another day about 20 miles on dirt roads. Probably wont do dirt roads again. The rain wasnt so bad, but the dirt just sifted up from below and settled everywhere. Ick. Come spring when I can work outside I will clean it up again. I was going to pull the motor out over winter and really do it up, but have since decided I will focus my efforts on the other car and leave this one as a driver. If it works, dont fix it?

I use Simply Green prior to hosing down the engine about twice a year.
I like mineral oil (like from the local pharmacy) thinned with WD40 sprayed on the engine & components & wiped down (lasts a couple of months). to turn those greying fabric hoses back to black...Pelican indullable ink painted on with a brush.

Here is a "before" picture. I need to pull the oil tank and refinish it with wrinkle black. Same with the coolant header tank but in semi-gloss black. Plug wires have since gotten cleaned and silicone coated. Wouldn't hurt to repaint the orange shock tops either. Pipe headers are ceramic coated, inside and out and all heat shields are removed. Still more to do but here's a quick look at where I started...

Any interior vinyl treatment. Even Armoral. I use a product marketed by Meguiar's called "Natural Shine Vinyl & Rubber Protectant" but that's just because I like Meguiar's products. The down side is that the silicone must be thoroughly removed before any paint is applied.
