    I am working on the engine compartment and need to exchange the original insulation mat as it is slowly crumbling away. It looks like some kind of dense black foam with a layer of fabric laminated on the engine side.
    Does anyone know the name/type of this material or has a source where to buy such heat resistant foam? I know about the silver foil laminated insulation mats but would like to find something looking original.

    Dignini, thanks, i have seen that post but the material does not look very authentic from what i can see.
    I've also found a material called KoolMat which looks not too bad on a photo (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/q-max/DSCF3560.jpg) and could probably be glued to a Soundcoat CSU back to replace the original mat.

    believe it or not original material is wet suit material neoprene/ nomex. I have a friend who has rebuilt 7 206/246 cars. Not sure of his source though

    They were not cheap but I got a 2mm of neoprene and if I remember correctly 9mm of dense sound insulation. Very good quality, they will send you samples free so you can work out what you want

    it is about 15mm thick right? about 5/8th?

    Update, the aircraft heath shield material is unfortunately only available in silver. Henk van Lith could custom build a Neoprene/Rubber mat but without the texture.

    Tom's Nomex/Neoprene info is interesting, Neoprene as base looks indeed like the base foam layer in my original mat, but Neoprene seems to be only usable up to around 100ºC, not sure that is good enough for the engine compartment. I haven't found a source for black Nomex foil as upper layer yet, Tom could you ask your friend what type the Nomex layer is?

    Attached is a picture of the original mat, you can see the base foam layer, and the burlap fabric laminated on top. The texture of the engine facing side of the mat is created by the upper laminated burlap thread layer. The mat has a thickness of 12mm (0.47").

    The mat in my photos is from #2600 (IT, build late '71, lists as early '72).
    Kevin, what materials did you use for the new mat?

    Adrian, This is the mat that I used:

    I stuck it with the silver side facing the engine with mat tucked under the A frames and peeled silver foil edges over the A frame. This gives a neat edge.
    Its not a simple glue on process as i am sure you can imagine. Takes quite a bit of fiddling around to cut to shape (A frames are not symmetrical!) with adequate to tuck under the frames and right foil margin. The tuck tends to pull the mat under and it is difficult to get nice and flat. I actually took two attempts at it. I then sprayed up some samples for the coating and colours. I would not say this is the best choice, but it is possible to get some good results.

    Kevin, thanks! The mat i choose for the lower layer is a black self-adhesive 10 mm impregnated fibre mat from a local dealer offered for engine room and bonnet installations. Now looking for a 2 mm top layer with the right texture.
    BTW, set fire to a small piece of the original material, it burned up nicely. Another reason to exchange the mat.

    Adrian, I did not attempt to fire test the original stuff. However, the original foam did not look like it would even attempt to resist combustion. The original hard coating may have offered some resistance. I did carefully test the new matting, including my additional coatings and heat resistant silver paint. I was quite nervous I was creating a combustible package. then i got less careful and got quite carried away with a heavy duty flame torch. All I could do was blacken it and eventually after several minutes burn a flame size hole though. Despite persistent efforts I could not get it to catch fire. I am quite happy what I have is good enough on the heat transfer resistance and combustion resistance. Wish i had some more the original foam stuff left to have some flaming fun. Your matting looks a pretty good match to me. Kevin.

    If you don't have original like firewall material, would that be a deduction by judges? Or does that fall under the `safety' free pass umbrella (assuming what you do have is safer than the original material)?
