On a 1988 328 GTS – the insulation, a foam type, lining in the engine compartment is coming apart. Any recommendations for its replacement, what have others used?

I also have an '88 328GTS and mine was "going bad." I removed all of it. It didn't looked great, seemed to "store" some oil vapor and probably was more fuel for a potential fire than useful for sound deadening.

I did do a test burn on some of it and it would light on fire albeit not easily.

Also, I found that after removing it, from the fire wall for example, the underlying red paint reflects more light than than the foam. Makes it a little easier to see and work on things in the engine compartment.

I can't comment on any increase in cabin noise. It was a long time between removing the foam and driving the car again. I'm sure there is some increase but I usually drive with the top off and have a Tubi so.....

photo showing firewall sans ugly, dark foam. still needs a nice cleaning one day when the engine is out.

I always thought about using Dynamat when the day comes that I need to replace this foam....but I haven't yet. Wondering if anyone else has used this.

    Here's an example: http://www.eastwood.com/dynamat-extreme-bulk-pack.html

Dynamat might be a good product but they have a few too many logos for my taste.

There are some similar products that are plain and would better suit a non-poser car.

I think we're mixing sound insulating material (foam in the 308/328) with heat insulating material (Kaowool). Different stuff, different purposes.

Apparently Aerogel has become rather more reasonably priced, to where it's beginning to be used in construction too. Might be worth looking into.

Disclaimer: I have no financial stake in Aerogel or any of the companies linked to below:

Pelican Products has the hood insulation foam for the porsche 944. These foam pads are similar to the Ferrari insulation, and I believe they are a foam that is designed to melt and help smother a fire. Not too pricey, the amount needed for the F car isn't that great. Two types, one with a waffle type weave, the other plain like oem.

My local F dealer had it pretty cheap. No screwing around.
