A friend and I were talking yesterday and came up with this scenario...

If a class was added to the 24 hour lemans race that had as the only rules:
    1. Minimum car weight = 800kg with driver.
    2. limit fuel allowed for the race [just to pick a number 10 gallons per hour (so 240 gallons)]

No other rules. anything goes. 4/6/8/10/12 cylinder. turbo.

What engine configuration would end up optimizing power/fuel consumption.

Well diesel engines are only more efficient at partial throttle, which at Le Sarthe only acounts for less than 25% of a lap, but that already is something. but from there on anything goes, it would simply be a case of calculating which would come out on top, but with so many variables, I doubt a simple calculation will do, and serious investment into simulation would be needed.
