Have any of you seen/used this stuff to "flush out the engine". You basically, drain your oil, then add a quart of this "dissolver", run your engine for 5 minutes at idle, then drain. It dissolves all deposits, gummy crap, old oil and all the junk out of the engine. Then you add your fresh clean oil and it makes for a much more complete oil change. This is all based on the CLAIMS of the product.

My biggest fear is that when one would drain the cleaner, there would still be trace amounts left in there, so that when you added your new oil, it would immediately be altered by the left over dissolver.........

    thoughts?

I know a couple of people that swear by the Amsoil engine flush. I may try it on the van when it hits 60,000 miles.

Sounds like it's just a can of heavy-duty detergents, which most motor oils have in them anyways. There shouldn't be too much left after the flush.

I remember the directions on one of the brands of engine flush instructing to drain the detergent, fill up with new oil and run for a few minutes, then drain that new oil and fill it back up with your final oil. So basically you change the oil twice, but the intermediate oil would help flush out the detergent. I'm pretty sure the main ingredient in most of these is simply kerosene.

A much bigger concern I've always had with the motor flush products is that while the engine is running with it in, at best the quality of the lubrication is marginal. After all, the purpose of the flush is to strip out all the gunk inside the engine, leaving fresh new metal surfaces to scrape and wear together without oil for those few minutes. If anyone has a tribological analysis of the motor running with only engine flush, it would be very interesting.

If you change your oil frequently and use quality oil, I doubt it will help the engine live longer or run better.

With modern oils motors routinely last 200k miles. Of the motors I rebuild very, very few are due to worn out lubricated parts, so I have to ask, just what exactly are you trying to achieve?

Our first car upon coming to the USA was an old Crown Vic. It ran somewhat OK but always had trouble starting in cold weather. My dad put a can of "Motor Up" in that was supposed to flush the crap out. Well, after that the car never ran right. I guess the gunk in there was what was keeping the car together! The car developed tons of oil leaks and problems it never had before.

I would stay away from that stuff. Any parts that are in mechanical contact are going to remain pretty clean. Parts that do not get mechanical contact are not going to be very well cleaned without some sort of abrasion.

So this stuff loosens all of the "gunk" while the engine is running, circulating throughout the engine with suspended "gunk"................???????

I think I'll continue with my 3k oil changes and maybe switch the filter out every 1500 miles instead.

This reminds me of a friend's dad who had a v6 s-10 with 150k mi, and hadn't changed the oil for tens of thousands of miles. The guy even used it to haul his ski boat, it always pulled strong (enough). He changed his oil once, and the truck stopped running right and I think the motor only lasted another 2000 miles or so.
