Hello All I am putting engine in and understand that the gearbox torque tube and diff all slide back together once the nuts are loosened on the diff mounts. Does anyone know do I need to disconnect anything else? I need to get the gearbox back around 50mm. and at that the diff would come out of its support so would have that supported. Obviously care needs to be taken as these items are very, very heavy. Any feedback would be appreciated Regards Alastair
Have the method. All possible but only just!! 'Roseneath Engineering' The whole lot can be moved back Gearbox, torque tube and diff. There is a gearbox mounting under the box that is on a thread this also needs to be loosened. No need to remove driveshafts. Will advise on how it all goes I have entrusted the local garage to do this job cos me on my own in the wee Scottish garage underneath all that could be a recipe for disaster. I will then resume engine anciliaries etc etc etc etc etc in the wee Scottish garage!!! Regards Alastair
Alastair Please confirm drive shafts do not have to come out when all is done. I am expecting to need to replace center bearing in drive shaft some time and that will be a good thing to know. Ken
Ken, Alistair would not have had to remove the gearbox, tube or diff...he would have only had to slide them back using the movement the CV shafts allow. for your job, i would undo the tube at the gearbox, the CV's at the diff, drop the tube and diff after you've unfastened the E-brake cable and then split the tube on the ground...not difficult.
but, if you haven't, you make want to do the 'hanger' bearing now...or at least check it while you have access to shop facilites. good luck, brett
Thanks Brett hopefully not too late they are on the case today, which is the 'hanger' bearing? Regards Alastair
Crap! Sorry I'm late here. You do not need to pull the rear drive shafts. You will need to disconnect them from the hubs. Then loosen the differential. The entire assembly will slide back and finally the differential will hit the gas tank (if I remember correctly). That will just barely give you enough room to get the trans shaft clear of the flywheel.
Delighted, no hassles much more simple than rear shelf removal! The local shop did well. thanks to those guys. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks to you guys also for the moral support, always a bit worrying moving heavy stuff around. Appreciated. Regards Alastair
