Anybody here have to replace the insulation foam in their engine lid? (Mondial in question is a 3.2 coupe). There are 3 separate sections of foam.

Mine had been coming loose and slowly crumbling since I got the car just over a year ago. But now, it’s gotten much worse, to the point where whole chunks are coming apart.

First, while I do plan on fixing this shortly, is there any immediate danger to having crumbly foam pieces in there?

Can the foam be safely removed and just leave the lid alone (without replacing the foam), or is this a really bad idea? Does this foam actually help any with its intended purpose?

I’ve been checking the usual Ferrari vendors and the replacements are either NLA or about $300 a set. Does anyone have any cross-over reference equivalent for this foam? I’d rather buy a sheet of insulation foam and cut it down myself. Seems like a DIY kind of job.

practically guarantee you'll find something here that works both for looks and for quality and heat resistance. I've used their heat resistant foams on our foil stamping presses for years without incident, and used some in my Dino, many moons ago, to replace some crumbing foam it had. Aldo used it to replace the foam in the headliner.

I would not use the original material. Todays materials are much better then the old new stock. A fellow Ferrari friend used for example "Isoproq 19 30 23" insulation, used in Mercedes'.

Only the lid is also quite some work. I guess the insulation is in such a crumble state that you can vacuum clean most of it of.. Then clean it with terpentine to remove the adhesive. Do not use adhesive remover as it most likely ruin the paint. Then it is simple cutting things and apply it.

Oh wow. You're right, Dave. They certainly do offer lots of choices. I like that they offer foam with adhesive backing, which would make installation easier. But what I'm not sure is what type of foam to select, from their list. What thickness, etc.

I also found another Fchat thread where someone found a bulk roll of insulation foam at JC Whitney.

Would these options all suffice for the intended application in the Mondial? Just trying to narrow down what spec foam to get. Thanks again.

You don't actually need any foam at all, I removed all of mine. Also beware water collecting in it and rotting anything it's glued to ie the rear trunk wall. I just replaced the foam on the engine bay lid with slightly silvered heat sheild insulation, it's not standard but it was very cheap and looks better than foam.
It kind of looks like a silver version of the McLaren F1s famous gold engine bay insulation.

I used "Thermo-Tec Adhesive Backed Heat Barrier" from Summit to replace the three foam sections on my car's engine lid. I'm very satisfied with it... the adhesive is holding up fine and it's easy to cut and trim with scissors. It has a bright aluminum finish and you can see the pattern of the fabric backing -- it does not look bad. Very thin at about 2mm or so. I first made paper templates, and once I was satisfied with their fit, used them to show where to cut the barrier.

Note: If you're after stock appearance, this is not the way to go. Otherwise, I recommend it.

Chances are you'll find something very good at McMaster as well.

Indeed and it is easier to maintain when it gets dirty. I actually have zip on my lid.
I think the ones on the lid were only for reducing the noise.

Thanks everyone. I finally got around to addressing the foam problem on my car. BTW, Tom, your solution looks fantastic! Nice work!

As for me, I bought a big roll of High Temp Heat insulation, with foil on one side. Got it from JC Whitney. Also got a can of High Temp spray adhesive.

Turned it into a DIY, family project. We scraped off the old foam, traced out the panels on the new material, cut the insulation to size, sprayed it and fit the pieces in place. Definitely not an OEM look, but it came out ok, and I'm hoping it will last for years.

Saw another thread here on Fchat discussing the foam under the front lid, above the radiator. Out of curiosity, I checked mine today. Sure enough, my foam is completely gone as well! I'll probably just cut off another piece of the insulation and do the same thing. That'll be next week's project. I got plenty of leftover, so I may use a bit of it to line my front hall closet which is very much under insulated. But the car project comes first. ;)
