Need some urgent help. I started to clean the engine lid catches earlier and replaced the left hand one (viewed from rear ) in what i thought was the correct position, i checked its operation before closing the lid and it worked, so I closed the lid and now the side I cleaned will not open, the other side is fine, I can hear it releasing but it is still jammed.I have tried pushing, pulling it etc.Any ideas.

You are using the cable loop thru the firewall as well?

Or just the release lever in the door cup?

The 'worst case scenario' is you smash your way in, thru the $500 tail light.....HTH.

I have tried both cables, both catches click to release but it is still caught on the left side, is there any way of getting in through the wheel arch?

You can lift the side that releases, how far???

The cable on the hung side may just need the slightest additional pressure....you can hear both sides clicking open?

Obviously the one 'hung' is not seeing full travel or the hook on the hood is turned and hanging up on something, the latch body perhaps, on one of my cars it only works right if the "j" hook on the hood is loose, jamming it tight messes it up every time.....LOL!

Removing the fender liner would only let you see the front bulkhead side of the trunk space, maybe a cheaper place to cut an access hole though, if you cannot release it thru the RH gap of the free latch....

The side that releases opens just enough to maybe get my hand in, I will see if I can get a little more pull on the cable, but when i listen carefully the catch does click, so as you say, it may not have enough travel, the hook on the hood itself was very tight so I am assuming that it has not moved.
I will try again tomorrow night, and see what happens.

I mean to prop the RH side up and use a pole tool of some sort to find the cable and put more tension, on LH latch..how about it?

Did you try with someone else lifting the lid while you pulled the lever? I just redid the latches an a 78, and fortunately the taillights were out so I could reach in by hand to release the lid. I think sacrificing a tail light is probably the easiest way to solve the problem.
I looked carefully at the reserve cable while I had this stuff apart, and did see how it would be a help unless the main cable broke between the driver's side latch and the door jamb.
    Cheers and good luck,
    Tom B .

Same thing hapened to me Tom. Two people will open it. Particularly with Phillip hearing is release.

I remember being a contortionist trying to pull the release while reaching to lift the lid. :)

Sorry to hear that. This happened to me before. Often the hood will open if someone is pressing down on it while you pull the opening lever. We opened mine by going through the red tail light that was slightly loose and needed replacing anyways. So I got lucky that way. 2nd time it happened I kind of panicked since I had a brand new light in, but when I arrived at my mechanics place for help the hood just opened easily after my drive there .... go figure.

I meant to say I DO NOT see the value of the reserve cable. I need to learn to proof read, but it's not likely.

Happened on my car. New mechanic adjusted the catch, OOPS!

Solution was to lift the lid on the side that had unlatched, and a long stretched arm with a pair of pliers to tug at the hex bolt used to trap the wire to release the catch. Look at the front catches to get the idea. No big problem, but needs two guys... one to lift the hood, one with a long arm to trip the latch. No damage to the hood if you are careful.

    Good luck!

Good point, I forgot to mention the sustained tension at the latch cup, one of my cars DOES need that, a cassette tape or an ALTOIDS box fits perfect!!

    How's it going, Philip???

Don't forget to remove it to shut the hood or the door, it'll break the recess cup other wise..

    *cracking sound*

    Oh, well........

    Hi Tex and all,

DONE IT!!! After a sleepless night last night wondering and worrying about this problem,I got home from work today and took all of your advice, I lifted one corner and carefully wedged a piece of wood in the opening enough to get a torch in and a pair of pliers, I gripped the cable and twisted it and bingo--it released. I checked the latch and found that the little cylindrical part with the allen screw was not tight up against the square part by about 5mm. Before I tried to shut it again I removed the rear tail light assembly, just in case i need to get at it again, I have shut and opened it a few times and it seems to be o.k. now, guess I can sleep easy tonight !!
    Thanks for all your help,
    Ferrari's --love them
    regards

    Phil

Well, I haven't slept well in months, but that's all about Lady Valeria....LOL!

I had hoped the one side opening would be a slim ray of hope, to reach the other...glad you got it all sorted, mate!

    Drive on!
