go to your local autostore and buy an obdii scanner for $60. Plug it into the port and get the code.

It could be something minor or major, it's better to not take a risk and your scanner can be used on any 96+ car. The best investment you can make!

Once you get the code, post it here and someone can advise you as to what to do from there but we can't diagnose your car over the internet.

First off it is on for a reason. Like Rosacorsa said buy (my suggestion) borrow or go to Pep boys, Autozone etc and have them scan it. It is extremely easy to do plug it into the OBD II (located under the steering wheel on all OBD II cars delivered in the US) port and follow the on screen instructions.

There is a port under the steering wheel where you can plug in the OBDII scanner. After that turn your key to the on position and click "read" on the scanner tool, it will come up with code(s). Usually the codes are numbers like P1482 for example. Then you post the code on here or you can look it up and find out what is wrong with your car. 90% of the time, check engine lights are not serious and are from gas caps or just other tedious systems of the car, but it can be serious and you don't want to take a risk.

You can also as suggested drive the car to a local autostore and have them look up the code for you. But like I said buying the tool is a better idea because it works on any 96+ car and you WILL need it again.

Mine was on. Checked it, turned out to be the gas cap. All good, for a while.

Came back on prior to me selling it. Shelton checked it and smoked the evap system. Turned out to be the rollover valves on the tanks. 2800 later, all fixed. Had to remove the top assembly, rear lid etc.

It looks like a "fun" job on a spider!
