Engine managment problem?

    I have a 91 testarossa, and a few times now I lose power from half the engine. Car still runs but with significantly lower power and stalls if i don't have foot on the gas. Some one told me it could simply be connections to the engine managment system, Is this right and how do i find it to check?

    You may find many answers to your problem using the search button on the left top portion of the screen. I had a similar problem with my 328 and it turned out to be a small pin point burn hole in one of the spark plug extenders. A quick run to a local Ferrari dismantle company and I was back in business.

    Your problem may be based in the layers of bureaucracy that exists between the Upper Engine Management System and the Middle Engine Management system. As you may or may not know, there are channels of authority that must be followed when the Middle Engine Management wishes to communicate with the Upper Engine Management System...such channels are usually conveyed by memo and sometimes by e-mail. Most of the time, the din of Upper Engine Management patting themselves on the back drowns out the sheer panic of the Middle Engine Management system which leads to a headcount reduction in that department. As we all know, the Upper Engine Management System has sensors that want to be told what only what they want to hear, and nothing else. This is what is called "Closed Minded Loop" diagnostics . Anything out of spec either gets downsized or has some large measure of blame placed upon it.

    This is just the first step in diagnosing your car. Heaven forbid that your car’s electronics has another layer of Middle Engine Mismanagement that runs around in tight circles not knowing what to do until the Lower Engine Management system just says “screw it” and walks out on a peace accord attended by Middle and Upper Engine Management Systems in the Alps until the entire system shyts its innards onto your driveway.

    This is "typical" behavior if the engine is only running on one bank.

    Most likely the problem is either:

    1. one of the fuel pumps is not working, or

    2. the 1/6 bank ignition system is not working (if the 7/12 bank ignition system fails, both fuel pumps shut off on a '91 TR -- so, since yours will continue to run on one bank, the 7/12 bank ignition is not the problem).

    For problem #1, the first thing to do is to unplug the "y" white connector at the LH bottom side of the fuse-relay panel (which requires first unplugging the "x" white connector above it) -- if the fuel pump connections are "burned" like shown below in these photos, this is most likely the trouble (these are photos from 3 different TRs so this problem is not uncommon):

    For problem #2 -- use a timing light to confirm if the 1/6 bank ignition is firing, or not, when the engine is only running on the one bank.

    (But based on your description, I'd put the highest likelihood on problem #1 -- Good Hunting!)
