Just to understand, what are the symptoms of a Maranello engine mount failure before they go catastrophic?

Ah, think you know what I mean..

Everyone is talking about 550 Engine Mount failures, then somehow the motor loses oil and the motor seizes.

My question is what symptoms does a failing motor mount display before your oil is all over the ground?

Or do I have this all wrong?

The 575 had different, updated motor mounts.

Failure of a 550 mount only exposed the motor to danger it did not cause it. Also failure of the 550 motor mounts often had no symptoms and needed to be found by an under the car inspection that was routine when the car is serviced.

You can experience a metal on metal sounds coming from the trasmission area. Best thing to do is have a look at them. You would hear and feel the rub from the engine. You can also see the sag of the motor. My suggestion is to have your shop place it on a lift and have a look. If you own a 97-2000 and have not done them, do them..

What you are saying, even the replaced ones are bad.

No I am not saying that if you have replaced your motor mounts that they have gone bad. It is good however to have them checked every 15K and 30K miles to ensure they are in good shape. The 550 and 575 put out a great deal of torque that moves the engine back and forth. My point was that if you own a 550 or 575 and have not looked at them, look at them next time the belly pan is off to see that they are not cracked, depressed, or in poor shape.

The newer models to my understanding have had very few issues so if you have replaced them(550) then you should be fine.

I have owned 3 550's and replaced the orginal motor mounts on both, I have not had any issues and my 98 had 45K miles on it.

This 550's and 575's must be driven. I have experienced greater problems with lower mileage 550's--just my 2 cents

My car has chassis number ZFFZR49B0001203B5, engine no. 57947, first registered 19 July 2000.

I know that at some point the mounts were modified to fix this problem. Can anyone tell me if my car was built before or after the upgrade?

    Thanks
