Greetings, After nearly two years since removing, I finally installed the engine back in my 1981 GTSi . I'm pretty sure I have the engine mounts in the correct locations, however there is some uncertainity regarding any shims that may be missing . Looking at the engine with all four mounts secured, there is an obvious cant from fore ( timing belt side) to aft ( clutch side) as can be seen in the attached photo. Is this normal ? Or am I missing shims on the clutch side ? The shift linkage alignes well. No obvious interference noted so far. Regards, Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is a bit tricky the first time. Add and remove shims as necessary to line things up properly. A large pry bar is handy when doing this as is a helper for that matter.
John, Thanks for the reply. Are you suggesting that the engine should be level ? BTW....thanks for providing the motivation to get my engine back in. Following your posts and seeing the timely manner you completed things motivated me to get it going again ! Mike
on my '85, and I'd bet on your '81, the flatter spacers should be on the 2 rear mounts and the thicker ones (tapered, with the small diameter side up unlike the one in your photo) on the 2 front mounts. see this thread for more http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=154650 there definitely should not be the slope shown in your photo, the exhaust and likely cooling water pipes will not align. Note that the 4 motor mount brackets are not identical or even 2/2 with opposite corners being the same. There are 3 different part numbers so unless they are put on the correct corner the frame bolt holes will not line up.
Hey I'm glad to motivate. These cars are for driving not sitting. The above is absolutely correct. The 5-8 bank has more horizontal attitude adjustment. I ended up using thinner washers to really even things out at the front. A bit anal but it's right.
Kurt, Thanks for responding. I did review the thread you provided, as well as other engine mount related ones. I followed the parts manuals for orienting the brackets. However, since the brackets are not marked, I followed the 'pictures' in locating them. One set of brackets, the ones on the timing belt end, have a third hole in the flange that interfaces to the silent block. Perhaps I'm interpreting this wrong and consequently have the #15 brackets interchanged with #16 and #17 . Regarding the spacer orientation ...all four have a counterbore machined on one side. It appears that a washer is fitted in the counterbore. So I oriented the washer side of all four spacers to the threaded standoff of the silent block mount. Flipping the front spacers so the larger diameter interfaces the frame seems odd. What would the purpose of counterbore and washer? Regards, Mike
Interesting. I don't remember seeing any 'third hole' on any brackets. Only by measuring them (10mm difference in lateral position of mount in relation to studs in trans case is noticable if you've got a sharp eye) and comparing against a fully assembled 308 up on a lift could I correctly orient mine. I didn't use any washers in addition to the 4 spacers between the mount and frame. The spacers' counterbores also seemed at first to me to fit near perfectly with the mounts' standoffs, however conversely there is no purpose of the front spacers' shape (curved taper) if the wide part is facing up. From an engineering POV you don't need any more material on the mount (up) side, but against the frame you want to distribute the force(s) over a larger area. I bet the 'counterbore' is there so that the spacer sits tight against the frame, with no real possiblity to 'rock' or have less than ideal face-to-face contact. I seem to remember noting that on earlier 308s the frame cross members that the engine sits on are smaller section tube than on my QV and I believe did not have any reinforcement metal around the mount area, so you probably want to distribute the motor's load over as large an area as possible especially on earlier cars. cheers Kurt
John / Kurt Thanks for the help. I looked at the parts catalog again and it looks like my Italian is not what it used to be !! Re-reading it it carefully , I noticed that the tall spacers are called out for the "anteriori" side, even though the brackets are different. You guys are correct. I will swap the spacers and also orient the tall ones with the large diameter against the frame. Thanks again Mike
