Had someone ask me today about engine numbering on a Lusso advertised by Fantasy Junction.

    The engine is stamped:

    4735
    1596/62E

The chassis is #4735 and the add for the car calls the second set of numbers (1596/62E) the 'Interno' number.

Anyway I don't recall the significance of this terminology so I was hoping someone would take the time to explain or point me in the right direction for reliable research.

    Thanks,
    James Patterson

The important thing is that the engine no. and the chassis no. (also called serial no. and V.I.N.) match. That is an indication that the car has it's original engine. The internal no. (numero interno) is just a sequential number assigned to that block. There will not be a direct correlation between the two, as that type of block was used for more than one type of car, and the blocks which were then built into engines were not necessarily used in strict numerical sequence. However, if you suspect that the engine no. has been altered, perhaps to use an incorrect engine but not suffer the diminution of value associated therewith, the factory records (a bit hard to access) can confirm that a certain internal no. was assigned to a certain engine. I hope this helps.

    Thank you both, very helpful.

I think in this case it is not a question of authenticity more just wanting to learn something that I had not given much thought to in the past.

    Again, thank you both!
