Hi, Is there a writeup on the fulll procedure for an engine out service on the 355? I've searched and found a number of threads outlining specific parts of the process, but I haven't found a complete step-by-step procedure writeup yet. Is there one? Thanks. SNB
http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53351 contains a great illustrated step-by-step description of removing the engine using the 2 jack method. What you do when you have the unit separated from the car you can build using the search facility for each step. Ernie (amongst others) has posted up great stuff too (centered around the 348 but mostly applicable to the 355). If you also look at threads composed by 355spider and UConnHusky you will be in really good shape. Anyway, I'm indebted to them because that's what I did for my first (and only) major and it worked for me!
After quickly looking through the 8 PDFs, I realize that they are part 1 of a 5 part series that documents the entire major service. A search by the RF128706 username in Advanced Search didn't pull up any further parts of the series - have these parts not been posted yet? Thanks.
Unfortunately the posting stops there. Like many I searched for the follow-up posts (you can see that RF128706 planned to cover inspection & cleaning, service items, camshaft and tensioner bearing and even re-installation of the engine). Such a pity as Part 1 is so well put together and illustrated (was it so good that Ferrari frightened him off?!.....) However, you can find all you need for the other steps on this great forum thanks to those who have taken the time to record their expertise for the rest of us. For my part, it was Ernie's posts that showed me that it was possible and it just grew from there. It's great fun taking the engine and transmission out for the first time - IMO, the most important factor is to have sufficient time; I just cant imagine doing it with one eye on the clock...............as Ernie would say, it's just nuts and bolts after all!
RF stopped posting on this forum because of certain ass holes and tossers he encountered. Very sad indeed because the man was informative and an inspiration.
Yup, that's what I understood........I wasn't connected to the forum in 2005. I can only hope that he has some way of knowing how much so many of us appreciate his contributions.
Good to know...it sounds like completing what he started would be an awesome idea: a PDF document, divided into sections of the entire major service, with embedded pictures and hyperlinks for interested readers to detailed image sets and/or threads that go deeper into each topic. Too bad I don't have a 355, and I've never done a major service. However, I'd be more than happy to contribute if people can email me their step-by-step procedures, in a format similar to the part 1 PDF, and pictures they collected. I'd then edit it all into one complete document as above. SNB
If this doesn't happen before October 2012 I will gladly do a writeup with pictures when I perform my major. Rob
