I recently drove a Mondial t and noticed a very audible whine coming from the engine bay. It wasn't startling, just not what I'm used to. Although I have quite a bit of experience with the 308, 328 and Mondial 8 this was my first 3.4. Is this typical? The drive was only a short trip "around the block" so I couldn't get up to speed.

BTW, I read the "Latest victim of the 348 gearbox curse" thread (whew, all 144 posts) and am not sure if this is the same. History on this car is unknown, and number of burnouts as well.

    Thanks in advance.

One possibility is that 348s (and I suppose Mondial 3.4 also) have an exhaust injection system to inject air into the exhaust during warmup (until coolant reaches about 150degF IIRC). Mine rattled when I bought the car, and once I figured out what it was, I removed the system. I think I've heard some people refer to this sound as a "whine", so it's one possibility. If the system is working properly, it should shut off after a few minutes of running, so that's one way to verify if that's the actual sound you're hearing. Of course without more info, it still could be some other mechanical problem.

Thanks, but this was pretty much throughout the ride (about 20 minutes) and I let it warm up before putting it in gear.

Possibly something to do with the power steering found on the Mondial T? Maybe low on fluid?

    Hey,

I have an '89 t. Mine whines too. I know what you mean re. the difference in the whine from the gearbox one, as mine is going in for a bearing replacement for "that" whine. The whine you refer to is one that sounds more like an engine squeal merged with a belt squeak, and comes from the front of the engine, making the car sound (at idle only) as if it were something with a fiat's small cc. engine in it... Mine was directly related to the age and quality of the oil as well as the engine temperature. The older the oil got, the higher the temperature and RPM had to get for the whine to subdue. I change oil every 6 months/3000 miles whichever comes first, using 0W40 in winter and 5W40 in summer (I'll put in a 10W50 when tracking). In the summer mix, I will put a 10% addition of 90W synthetic additive, which ensures the oil pressure reaches the 5 bar (1/2 dial mark for US users) at 5000 rpm on hot days. Since I changed the oil th whine reduced dramatically (with or without the additive mind you, so that's not the cause).
