What is the time needed to warm up a 430 motor suffiently. I have been told many things but just wanted to know whats correct. please chime in.

Do I have to use shell oil or can I use Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. What are the pros and cons?

The proceedure is in the the owners manual, but recall is the OIL ( not water) temp has to be approx 150. Then be sure to set the dip stick in the slot but not tighten. The check point should be between the upper /lower , favoring the lowering side of middle. This accounts for oil in accumulator and in sump system.

Warm up time will vary a lot on ambient conditions and the load you put on the car. It's best to know your normal operating oil temperature and wait until at least half way there before you push on towards spirited driving.

Ferrari recommend the specific oil brand Shell Helix but that's as much to do with corporate sponsorship than anything. Use a high-end brand and stick to the correct weight (5w/40 or 0w/40 for a 360 - not sure about 430) and you'll be fine.

I just get in and drive but keep the rpm below 4K until oil gets to about 140. My dealer has put mobil 1 0-40 in mine since new. Now has 21K miles.

Thats what I do too. No reason to let the car idle for ten minutes before driving off. I drive my 430 off upon cold start but keep revs below 4000 till it hits 140. By then I'd already be entering the highway. Perfect timing. No issues so far.

My Ferrari head service dealer advises a 30 second warm up at least on a dead cold engine and never get it and rev it hard whilst standing till it has time to get to operating temps.

30 seconds is easy. I need about 5 minutes anyway to make sure my hair is alright, then put on my aviators, check my teeth for spinach, select the right audio track, wave at the fans and all.

    +1 LOL.

To the OP, please go through this thread :

As for the oil, I stick with the Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 which I buy in large quantities for all the cars.

No, not your pre-drive, or anyone else's pre-drive for that matter. No offence intended to anyone or their methods. Just the incessant repetition of the tried and trusted thread on "how long to warm your engine / oil" which has been discussed to death ten thousand times already!

But hey, y'all knock yourselves out if ya wanna!

You know I was kidding right?

Such topics are repeated over and over but someone's gotta help than give the cold "go search the forum" reply right? Cmon, where's the love? Lol...

In response to the repetitive posts and the 'search' function...

What about a folder at the top or a sub folder of the 430 section

In there, have a bunch of sticky posts regarding stuff that is always brought up

    *differences in years
    *f1 vs manual
    *warm up time
    *oil

    etc...

It would seem like it would remove a LOT of repetitive posts and would be a LOT easier than using the HORRIBLE search function.... also, it would allow the MODs to put the posts that are most meaningful/helpful there..

I think it would really clean up the main forum.

    Just a thought.

Good idea but let's not have one for the timing belts - they're always good fun! :D
