We need to put a hardwood floor into a new house which has radiant (in-floor) heating. I have belive a totally 'floating' floor is the way to go here (ie no nails or glue fixing the floor to the subfloor, the floor is locked together and allowed to 'float', with 1/2" gaps for expansion underneeth the baseboards.)

I'm looking for an engineered 3-plank at the best price in the SF bay area, any sources? I'd like to pay around $2/ft^2 not $5 the idoit hardware stores are charging.

Pergo? or the similar items? I've done an install before, and a few items you should know: Home Depot/Lowes provides you with two or three options of the grades, however they are the lowest grades. The home owner purchased the goods from a company out in Florida and had them truck shipped - which was still cheaper than buying them from a flooring and tile vendor locally. The grade was the second to the top, which isn't offered at hardware stores, only at specialty stores.

Ask for samples, which you might have to pay for at the hardware store just so you can see how the colors blend with the surroundings. What you like in the store will not be what you like in the home.

Easy to install, even easier around the edges and trim with a jigsaw. Circular saw is a bit too much for these floorings. If more than two people are installing this flooring, (if you are getting a DIY kit), get two kits with the alignment pieces and hammer but piece. It's worth the time you'll save.

And if this isn't what you were wanting info on... eh.. ignore my post. =)

Do you guys have an Ikea? They have it for $1.35 and at one point it was made by Pergo for Ikea. I had it in my Condo for two years and it was great.

Hi guys. First things first an engineered floor is different from a laminate floor in one big way. The pergo's and other laminates like IKEA sells are just that...a compressed wood dust with a laminated surface on top, kinda like a countertop. Yes they are cheap and very simple to install, especially the new click systems. Most laminates are simply a photo etched "wood" design pattern that repeats itself on every board. I suggest a company called "Torley's" for any kind of laminate floor. Rather than being one standard size the higher end "Torley's" comes in random lengths and with differed patterns to give the impression of real wood. I'd also only use a 8mm or thicker laminate. The thin ones tend to bounce way too much!

An engineered floor is actually real solid wood. It usually has a plywood base with a thin layer of real wood on top. It also "Clicks" together and comes in random lengths so as to give the illusion that it is a solid hardwood. In fact with the really good engineered floors (like "mirage") there is enough real wood that it can eventually be sanded if scratched or damaged or if you just don't like the color any more. The web address for Mirage is:

I love Mirage products even the solid wood line. They are always straight and always fit together nicely. Any other questions, just ask.

Jay is THE man when it comes to hardwood floors!

Jay, I still have our PM conversation printed out and referred to it religiously when we picked out our floor. They just finished the install 2 weeks ago and it came out great. We went with BR-111 Brazilian Cherry engineered. We shyed away from the unfinished wood mainly because we didn't want to have to deal with all the maintenance required, add into that our 2 dogs and engineered was the way to go. I followed your advice concerning the bevel edge when picking and I'm quite happy with the finished product. Thanks for all the help!

    Dave
