Hi I am absolutely brand new to the whole Ferrari scene; I wanted to ask a few questions:

I approached an independent Ferrari shop owner today and asked him if I can work for him and learn the craft. I said I didn't want to be paid, and I am dead serious about learning. I told the owner that I was willing to sweep the floors, clean windows, get lunches for the mechanics and so. He told me that he was really busy and that he did not have time to instruct at the moment; however, he said that I should return in a month. He told me April was super busy and that it would be better to return around the end of April. He gave me the card to the shop and enthusiastically shook my hand. That night (tonight), I sat down at my computer and followed up with an email to make sure that the owner knew I was not just some guy pissing away the day; gave him my mobile and email as well as a thank you for your time letter.

What I am getting at is this:

What should I do to make a bigger impression without being overbearing? Should I come back sooner than a month? Is there anything else I can do to help my odds of being hired?

Really, even if your not a mechanic any advise would be great. Just for the those who are replying (if any may reply to this post) your target audience is a 23 yr old with no knowledge base of Ferrari lingo or savvy mechanical skills. As a matter of fact I know just about nothing about cars (mechanically).

    Appreciated,
    Erik

How about going to college and doing a course on mechanics? in the meantime ask this guy if you can work at the weekends whilst attending college, he may take you a lot more seriously then.

    BTW Welcome to Ferrarichat :)

+1. In the interim, I would be voraciously reading anything and everything regarding Ferrari. There is a tremendous amount of information available on this forum. Due to limited time, I would concentrate on the 8 cylinder, mid-engine series of cars: 308/328; 348/355 and 360/430. If you have time, then read about the 12 cylinder series.

Log onto the Ricambi website and study the exploded parts diagrams for the aforementioned cars, this will provide you with some idea of the lay of the land.

    Best of luck.

Why are you so sure you want to be a Ferrari mechanic when you know so little about them?

I'm not trying to discourage you I'm just curious what your motivation is?

Are you already a mechanic? Do you just want to be around Ferrari's because they are so cool? (I know I do) If so then maybe you can find a way to be around the Ferrari scene without turning a wrench.

I've spend hours a day learning about these cars, you could really never learn everything.

Welcome to F-chat and the wonderful world of Ferrari!!!

What part of the Bay Area are you in? Do Us both a favor and do a search and read my several comments to others interested in this field. If you are still interested, get in touch.

One more thing, I do not know which shop you approached but in this business you have one thing going for you and one thing only, reputation. A big part of that reputation comes from which shop(s) you work for. Never, ever work for a bad one. Better to work for free for a good one. I would be happy by PM to give you my opinion of who in this area you should even consider going to work for. Some are good and some are a nightmare you don't want anything to do with.

Just in case you might not be aware, Brian is one of the absolute best Ferrari Techs in the Country, if not the world. He has forgotten more information than most other Techs ever knew. Listen to his words as you would from an oracle.

I just came here today to let everyone know about the OP. He grew up wanting to be a Marine and enlisted on his eighteenth birthday. He was given a medical discharge at 23 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. He died in his sleep Friday night.

He was a credit to the Corps.

    Semper Fi Erik

And when he goes to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell "One more Marine reporting sir, I've served my time in Hell".
