I was reading an article in EVO magazine about the LP640 and as most know
the capacity has been upped to 6.5 litres from 6.2, hence making 631bhp and
487lb.ft torque. Then I thought about the Enzo's engine.
The Murcie makes its peak power at 8000rpm. The Enzo on the other hand is "just" 6.0 litres and has a peak power of 650bhp at 7800rpm. Thats half a litre and 200rpm lower, yet it makes 20bhp MORE. And even though the engine is down on displacement it still makes 485lb.ft of torque, matching the LP640.

If the Enzo's engine had the Murcie's capacity, theoretically it'd be making over
    700bhp!

Just makes you marvel at what Ferrari do, they seem to have all bases covered
    nowadays.

Good point, but you have to remember that the Enzo cost about $300k more than the Murc.

Amazing improvements can be gained with porting an managing both intake and exhaust flow.

But also keep in mind these are quoted numbers...

It is also interesting to take into account the fact that the Enzo's engine began development more than 3 years ago and it still makes more power...

Engines are purpose built and HP is not everything, the LP640 being a heavy car needs its grunt more in the lower power band. I’m sure that the torque on the LP640 engine kicks in at a much lower RPM then the engine in the Enzo does.

rev.atari, you are correct. But the weight/power ration is also a lot better on the Enzo, so the lp640 would probably have no advantage there either.

The Murci's engine block can be traced back to the mid 70s; it's hardly cutting-edge when compared to a clean sheet design from 2002.

It's just very rare to see an engine lower in displacement and with a lower redline to be making more power than a bigger engine that revs higher.

While the Enzo is the engineering marvel here, I've gotta bring up another engine. The Viper's engine displaces a massive 8.3 litres and they can only find 500 hp in there. Theoretically, if you gave a Ferrari engineer 8.3 litres, they'd be able to get....

about 900 horses. That's based off of Enzo figures. If we take into account the design of the FXX engine, an 8.3 litre version would churn out over 1000 hp!

    The Lambo motor makes 97bhp/liter.

    The Enzo motor makes 108bhp/liter.

Any normally aspirated motor that can crack the 100bhp/liter mark is a truly exceptional piece of engineering.

The Honda S2000 (with the 2.0-liter) is the highest I have ever heard of at 120bhp/liter.

the best engine is the CGT's V-10. ~400lbs and 600hp.

The 997 GT3 comes very close. I just read that Porsche guarantees each engine makes at least 415 hp. With the ram air effect it's supposed to generate an extra 10, I believe. From a 3.6 liter- probably the best 6 cylinder in the world that I've heard of. Seems like most people look past these engines at the turbocharged versions of the same block; that's somewhat of a shame.

How come Ferrari never puts in superchargers or turbos into their engines like Porsche?

but its also a matter of how highly strung the motor is

Viper may be much less efficient as a capacity-power ratio, but will churn out 500hp for decades with the odd oil change

Enzo will sh*t itself unless it gets its weekly cam belt..yada yada

bit exaggerated but u get the point...

Don't forget the 288 and F40 as well. Not to mention their F1 cars from 1980-1988...

208 Turbo, 288 GTO & F40 all have turbos. Any others?

EDIT: oops, the judge beat me to it.
