I was just looking (admiring) a 2003 creampuff Enzo. It looked to be un-driven.

    --Anyway--

I noticed it has large diameter headers that travel about 2+feet before going in to the cats, and has heated O2 sensors with inspection port right at the cat entrance. In order for those cats to light quick enough to pass the stringent CA spec with NO air injection system, it must have the ignition timing very retarded at startup and up to about 2800 revs (as this is the zone where it's driven during the certifying smog test).

Can someone look in the book and post the timing?
    Thanks.

Each catalytic converter consists of a pre- and main converter. The pre-catalytic converter is designed for fast warm-up to limit emissions when the engine is first started.

    Thanks Bill,
Are you saying the pre and main are housed in the same can? The first cats look to be a descent size. If you look at modern cars emission systems, the big trick is getting the pre cats within inches of the exhaust valve to help them light. Also, do you know about the ign timing. Given the length of those headers, even the pre cats would take time to light. Time that's precious while running the certification testing.

    Thanks again

Both cats are in the same housing. The cars starts at high RPM for 30+ seconds. With the large displacement, it doesn't take long to heat up the cats. I don't know the ignition timing, but that is computer controlled so they could be doing something there as well.

Thank you. The cold start at hi revs is interesting. Ferrari uses this setup to help the cats light on another model.

    The specs are 2,800 +/- 300 rpm with the coolant temp below 122 +/- 3.6 deg F.

Does this sound about right on the Enzo?

    Thanks

Yes, that does sound about right for about 30 seconds.
