Now that the 599 GTO is considered the most powerful Ferrari, I am wondering if you would consider it to "out shadow" the Enzo. With the super fast gearbox, and of course it has the same engine as the Enzo, but I'm pretty sure it has been further modified.

Anyway, can the still Enzo be considered the ultimate Ferrari (when it comes to performance), or has the GTO taken over?

I haven't driven either of these so I may be totally off in even comparing them, maybe the GTO won't even be comparable-a totally different car.

    So what's the verdict?

    mmmmh. two camps:

    1) the math proves its the best so yes
    2) cars that are suped up versions of mass production cars, typicall will never appreciate. So 288gto, f40, f50, enzo have an intinsic value. CS, scud, 16m, 599 gto etc do not.

i fall into camp 2. So if there is intrinsic value to the special cars, then they shld hold value better because they capture the spirit of ferrari.

if the 599 gto and enzo cld both be had for 450K, id buy the enzo.
if they cld both be had for $1M, id buy the enzo.

at the end of the day, im not nearly good enough to get a 355 to 9/10ths so buying the 599 gto because it outperforms the enzo is a gross fallacy.

i prob didnt even answer the question but thats my 2 cents.

I think the only real answers can come from those lucky enough to drive/own both cars. But in my eyes, the Enzo will always be king of the jungle.

    Different dogs for different hunts.

Both are the biggest in their yard.

Each would win in different areas considered important by enthusiasts.

No one sane would judge either as anything but very special.

I'm surely fortunate to be able to give an opinion (very soon :) ) on one of them. I hope some day to do the same for the other.

But, no matter, to paraphrase: these are the "best to times" for performance cars. Enjoy them.

George330 is in a position to compare. As a matter of fact, he posted a very nice comparison / write-up on this subject as he owns (or owned by now?) both an Enzo and a 599 GTO.

I provided plenty of feedback on my impressions about my GTO in a separate thread. I think it is pretty obvious that I looooooove this car. Wished I could start a similar thread about an Enzo ;)

It depends on how you define exclusivity--i.e., can it be attained by modifying an existing platform to X degree and only producing a given number of them, or is it only guaranteed for cars that come from a clean sheet design and are also limited in number?

That's why the Enzo still trumps the GTO for me. It's design was a true clean sheet (in theory--perhaps there were carry over elements from the F50, but not anything terribly significant).

But then, there's the question of the 288 GTO and F40, which were not clean sheet designs and still have iconic status...

I wanna know how the original 288 GTO got to be the first of the supercars. Why do we start with the GTO? Is it because of the modern era/classical era divide?

    Rambling.

    Quick summary

    1. The GTO is much easier to drive than the Enzo. 99% of drivers (including myself) would be quicker in a GTO

    2. The GTO soundtrack is far superior to the Enzo soundtrack

    3. The GTO has better brakes, gearbox software and traction/suspension control. It is a true performance benchmark

    4. Driving an Enzo in SPORT mode reminds you that this car is 7 years old. RACE is the only choice

    5. The Enzo is a faster car in absolute terms than the GTO. It is lighter (and feels it) and that makes all the difference. However it is amazing to see how tyres and electronics can negate a 300kg advantage around a track. One has to admire what Ferrari have done with the GTO

    6. Clarkson is either an idiot or likes being controversial. There is no way the GTO deserves such criticism

    7. The GTO cannot match the sense of occasion that accompanies every drive of the Enzo. The GTO has a more comfortable cabin, but I simply don't want to climb out of my Enzo

    8. The Enzo has better steering (although not as good as that of my Carrera GT).

    9. The Enzo is -to my eyes- simply stunning. The GTO is beautiful but not unique. And unfortunately the world has also seen the GTB, the HGTE and the Aperta. 10 years from now this will make a fair bit of difference on its residual value

    10. The Enzo is worth twice what the GTO is worth and -in my opinion- that's about right! It is a legendary Ferrari, one that blew me away when it was new and still makes me go down to my garage to have a look before I go to bed. Owning one is an honour and a privilege

Let me know if you have more specific questions

    Great post George.

I guess this could be another thread on its own.. but does anyone believe that Ferrari might release upgraded software to help out w/ some of those 7 year old disadvantages the Enzo possesses?

    Great post!

I wonder if any owners have ever considered upgrading the Enzo gearbox to something similar in the GTO along with maybe the brakes? It seems like a good idea.

It's nice to hear that at the end of the day, the Enzo is still king.

They really should as the Enzo is still there flagship, it is still in a way in style, meaning it should be treated like an out styled Ferrari.

The new GTO is more powerful than the Enzo. It's faster around Fiorano than the Enzo. It's the fastest road car that Ferrari has ever produced. And, it carries the GTO moniker proudly :)

    What else matters?

Style, exclusivity, price, etc. are all secondary concerns, in my view ... for what it's worth.

I know my opinion doesn't matter but to me the 599 body is over used. It started with the GTB, then the HGTE, then the 599XX, now the GTO which are all beautiful in their own terms. On the other hand you have the Enzo which I think still is the king of Ferrari. After all it was named after the founder ( Enzo Ferrari )!
Ferrari have yet to build their next " supercar" which will be a successor to the Enzo. New styling, new body, V12, lightweight, perhaps put a turbo just like the F40, and the next supercar should be faster than the Enzo AND THE 599GTO on the road and on the track!

Correction my friend... The GTO is NOT the fastest road car Ferrari has ever produced. Merely the fastest around Fiorano. If you define "fastest" by it's time around a certain track then of course you are right. Although I feel that an Enzo with the GTO brakes, gearbox software, tyres etc. would probably lap Fiorano in the 1.22 s

In terms of outright acceleration the Enzo is faster as one would expect

The Enzo is what it is. No point trying to change that. Ferrari of course will change the game with the next Fsupercar when it becomes available. This infatuation with changing and upgrading, its a manufacturers game and duty, not the privateers, IMO.

i think u hit the nail on the head...suped up versions of mass production cars will have ahard time holding value...enzo, f50, f40 etc are special cars. they werent whored out.

i understand your point about outright acceleration ... but Ferrari themselves call the 599 GTO "the fastest road-going model in our history" :

    http://www.ferrari.com/English/GT_Sport%20Cars/CurrentRange/599-GTO/Pages/599GTO.aspx

Yes ... based on lap times at Fiorano, Ferrari's test track. Not a bad metric to use, i would think :)

And sure, you could imagine putting a variety GTO parts on the Enzo to make the Enzo faster on the track ... but that exercise does not elevate the Enzo in this comparison!

    Perhaps i'm a bit biased ;)

In absolute terms both are icons, one carries the name of the founder of the company, the other the most exclusive name in Ferrari road/race cars. Which is better, well to me both are special and unique in their own way. For example I know a GTO owner who this week drove his car a round distance of 2500 kms in one go, who in 3 weeks has done 3000 kms, for me the GTO is special because it blends Enzo power with GTB practicality, it will look spectacular parked at the beach front cafe, it will be loud enough to break glasses.

The Enzo is dramatic, a shape that is totally unique, its extreme, sitting in an Enzo is like sitting in a racing car, there is as George has stated a unique sense of occaision.

At the end of the anyone who is lucky to own either is of these car is very lucky indeed, both are an exhibition of Ferrari passion.

People refer to the HGTE as if it were a separate model but my understanding is that the the "HGTE" is just an optional package for the regular 599 GTB.

Lets not get confused. Even the body panels for the GTO are completely different in both weight and size. Deveoloped and manufactured specifically for the GTO. Just because it has the same body style does not make it anything like the GTB/HGTE 599's. The GTO was built on XX technology as a racecar designed for the street. Which in some circles is considered "THE" definition of a SuperCar. More practical, comfortable ,better engine noise, years ahead technologically speaking, faster and in my view better looking than the Enzo. Is an Enzo CURRENTLY more desirable than the GTO....Yes. The market place and its price says so. A couple of years down the road who can say. In the meantime I say move over.... here comes the GTO.

The Enzo is pretty unique in that there was a considerable engineering effort to produce such few cars. I don't think it would be very easy to turn another Ferrari into an Enzo by buying Enzo parts.

The GTO leverages the design and engineering of an existing production car. I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to turn an ordinary 599 into a GTO by buying GTO parts.

Exclusivity is pretty important to buyers of super cars. And, as pointed out, the high-speed acceleration of the Enzo is still pretty hard to beat over 7 years later.
