The bellville spring is the same diameter as the clutch plates, but its not flat and you should not interchange them for a clutch plate. The clutch plates are just that, clutch plates, and are meant to be in direct contact with the lined disc's. The bellville spring must be behind the clutch plates to compress the plates against the lined clutch disc's. I am curious to know the driving characteristics between a preloaded locking differential and a non preloaded one.
Well then the only place it would be able to go then, would be right behind one of the outer cross plates. But then again that brings up the question of spacing. As I said the stuff inside is already pretty close from what I remember, so I don't know that you could get a belleville washer in there. Or maybe you could? I think we are over analyzing this anyway. There are very, very, very few Ferrari owners that are like me, and are willing to take apart their diffs just to change the stagger of the plates. Even fatbillybob had never taken apart a 348 differential until I did it in his garage, and he has rebuilt more 348 gear boxes than anyone I know of. I did it because I'm just that kind of guy. The only guys I could think of wanting to do that would have been the guys campaigning 348's in the first challenge series, or Le Mans and those days are long gone. Then to talk about modifying the diff be adding in a belleville washer pushes the actuallity of someone really doing this to their diff into the - never gonna happen zone. I really think it's nothing more than bench racing at this point, but ya never know.
you don't know me do you . . figuring out how something works is not over analzying . .. yeah I am that "never gonna happen" zone guy . .. I'm glad you think there are very few owners like you . .. I've been thinking the same about myself . . . you cut a lot of metal and design things too??? . . if so we gotta meet mate!!! . .. I wouldn't think anything about cutting the diff a bit deeper to put the spring in if I felt it was an improvement . .. as I said before I wanted to understand the difference between the 308 and the 348 diff's . .. now I understand it and can make "informed" modifications . .. I guess whoever was helping you never compared a 308 diff that have over 100 ft-# breakaway . . . wasn't that what you were concerned about and wanted more of????. . everything can be explained (that was made by man ) and the lack of static breakaway on the 348 vs. the 308 was not explained as far as I know . .. until now . if this really is over analyzing I'm hanging out on the wrong forum . . . am I???? cheers
the P forums have some good discussions about it 'cause they actually race their cars .. some of the guys take 'em apart and understand how they work too
Easy there big fella. No need to get all fussy. I was just saying that the vast majority of Ferrari owners aren't into modifying their cars. I'm not one of those owners, and it's seems that you aren't either. But what I was trying to say it that, unless someone is willing to tear apart their gear box and then the differential, to put in this belleville washer, what's the point? I'm all for try new stuff to improve the performance of our 348's, but unless someone is actually gonna do it, what's the point. I've already torn mine down, and put it back together. So unless I have to I'm not planning on doing it again. Plus I'm happy with the plates staggered. So you like cutting things up huh? Well then you'll like hanging out with the Stooges. We are the kind of guys that love fooling with these cars. Especially fatbillybob, that boy really loved cutting his car up. I see your profile says your in Cali, so If you're in the So Cal area hit us up. I would love to meet ya, and I'm sure the rest of the gang would like to meet you also. We can always use another guy that thinks outside of the box.
cheers dude . .. I actually thought you were the kinda guy that wanted to take your diff out again yeah I met FBB . .. we'll have a good time . .too bad we're not closer . . I bought his scrap metal I got it so bad the whole diff intrigues me . .. here's another story .. I had a new Porsche 996 that was going back to the dealer every week for a new rear main seal (surprise right? ) . . . I started getting kinda nasty with the service guys (another surprise) and the topic of LSD's came up . . .at the time I thought all LSD's turned both wheels in the same direction ('til your 348 thread and buying FBB's car) . .. anyway this idiot in the service dept tells me my 996 has a LSD in it which wasn't even an option on the f'g cars .. . I walk out in the service dept and spin the wheels and they go the opposite direction and basically tell the guy he's an idiot . .. he was wrong and I was wrong I guess . .. my 911 race car has some other kind of tq bias diff in it and it has less breakaway than the 308 but nowhere near loose like the 348 . . .as Artvonne mentioned I'm curious about the real handling attributes to it being open during coasting. cheers again . . I think FBB tried to round the stooges for a trip down here . . figured I'd fit right in . . sounds like it only you don't want to take your diff apart again? . . that makes no sense to me . . it's so easy the 3rd time and I'm not joking . . . life is like that. cheers Sean
pic of FBB's car . .. relocated to the back of the shop by the welding and fab department .. it was taking up lift space . .you guys can come play with it cheers Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hmmm. You could ship it up to minnesota if its really in your way, I could clear out a lil spot for it. Think of the ROOM you would have.
AH HA!!!! You you bought his old ride. You're down in SD right? Yeah chubbalard did try to round us up to go down there. The problem is my work schedule is not normal. I'm almost always working on the weekends when everyone else has the days off. So that is why I couldn't go down there when the hill-billy tried to get us together. But we'll hook up eventually.
And it's much easier the 5th and 6th time. No joke, LOL!!!!! I would put things together and then tear them apart again, just because I didn't like how I put it together the first time, or because I forgot some small thing, or what ever. At one point I got so PISSED because I had dropped a nut aaaaaaall the way inside the gear box when I was putting the front cover plate back on. The damn thing fell into the very back of the gear box and would not come out. I had it tipped so it was laying on it's back, that way I could just sit the cover on it while I was putting on the nuts by hand. So fat boy tells me "I wouldn't do that if I was you", and intypical Stooge fashion I did it anyway. Wouldn't you know it I drop the VERY LAST NUT in the box. I was turning the thing upside down and shaking the piss out of it, and the nut would only go further into the box. Hahahahahahaaaaaa! I finally took of the bottom inspection plate and got LUUUUUUCKY, the nut fell right out. So yeah I do know it's easier the 3rd time.
