Hey guys, I am not very familiar with techno music at all, but I do like burning CD mixes of EVERY type of music just to have for future reference or to let friends borrow.

So what in the world would constitute a decent playlist of mainstream techno songs for this purpose?

I checked the i-tunes playlists, but honestly wasn't familiar with any of those songs in the slightest.

Keep in mind that asking for techno recommendations is like asking for a good non-fiction book; there's many categories and niches. You really have to find out what appeals to you. I highly recommend: http://www.ishkur.com/music/ to get a rough feel of the different flavors - also it's good to get the names of some songs you may like from the snippets. Click on the guide v2.5 link

And, of course, the best internet techno station:
Digitally Imported: www.di.fm Just click on one of the many streams.
    It's incredible stuff and free.

A couple of my favourite tracks (you may have a tricky time running these down, but they're worth the search)

    Scooter - Devil Drums
Scooter - I'll put you on the guest list

my suggestion would be to look for early 90's vintage stuff, this is when it was being created by guys with more talent than equipment. by the time the mid-90's came it was too easy for any old fool to use their computer sound card to belt out some moronic remix, and 10 years later it's still going on.

my favourites from back then (with relevent song/album/label):
    prodigy - experience
    moby - thousand/next is the E
3mb... actually the whole Tresor label is way cool
juan atkins - 420Low is like a mental dr who theme
westbam - mayday (in fact, ANYTHING to do with mayday is usually good)
praga kahn - injected with a poison
dye witness - observing your earth
Trance Europe Express... brilliant chill-out electronica albums
    aphex twin - anything
    the orb
    orbital
Trancemaster - the first 10 albums are 80% great stuff
Best Of Techno... the first 4 or so volumes i had, lost them. were pretty cool

this is all nice old-school stuff, progressive/industrial/trance/rave/breakbeat. i don't even have a record player anymore. :(
