    Hey,

Directv have recently launched their "view your TV on your iPad" app. Very nice sounding way to watch in bed, on the head (!) etc......

My problem is the DVR is a long way away from the router and it insists I need ethernet string between 'em - It would seem the easiest way to do that would be a couple of "powerline adaptors" (?)

Anyone have any experience with these beasts? Any good? - I was a very early wi-fi adopter *many* years back, and that didn't work too well - I'm a little gun shy these days ;)

    Anyone seeing success? Brand recommendations?

    TIA, cheers,
    Ian

I use a power line adapter to connect my bedroom TiVo to my network. Works fine for that purpose but I can't say how well it works for higher bandwidth applications

    Thanks for the suggestions guys;

    Hmmm - Hadn't thought of such a beast. As it's a gaming unit I assume it's fast?

Indeed! ;) I actually have an original (flying saucer) Airport base station sitting unused - I guess I could bridge it to the Netgear I'm using now but am again concerned about speed - There's also often ~10 devices connected so it may not be able to handle it (?)

Thanks! I've done a little more poking and they're claiming these things can handle 1080p video "no problem"..... Reviews are generally pretty good too. I think I'm gonna do a Frys run and pick up a pair - If they don't work they can be easily returned.

    I'll report back.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Yes, I have several in a junk drawer. The ones that worked are from Cisco, although some did die early and had to be replaced.

I use four of them, one to computer, one to firewall/router, one to DVD player and one to wireless a/p (moved it to highest point in house).

    Woo-hoo! :)

Picked up a pair of these; http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?is=REG&sku=687978&Q=&O=&A=details

$65 at my local Frys. Plugged 'em in and everything works as advertised for once.....

The Directv app incorporates a pretty nice remote control and the program browser is very nice. Seems that the channels I want will all stream live to the iPad and the quality is great.

One thing you can't do however (surprisingly) is watch recorded shows on the iPad, even if that's what playing on the TV..... Strange.....

They also claim that the "watch live TV on the iPad" function only works within your own LAN. I guess I'm gonna have to set up a VPN to fool it into thinking I'm local - No timeline on getting that done though. ;) [Anyone do that? IIRC, freevpn is still around?]

All in all I'm pretty satisfied.

    Cheers,
    Ian
