My Euro 308 QV has recently had a muffler self-destruct. It is pure Euro (no cats), and the Ansa system on it I assume is what was stock (not sure). Car has just over 100k miles on it, and one of the coils failed which resulted in a backfire sufficient to internally decimate the muffler.

I have searched the archives and am trying to decide on what to replace the system with. Here are some of my thoughts based on my searches so far:

    i) Ansa -- I really liked my old Ansa, it had a different sound than any of the other 308s I've ever heard. I can get a new (non-stainless) system for $2350.

ii) Tubi -- Of course Tubi has to be mentioned in this discussion. I've heard very differing opinions on this on the boards here. Some rave, some say it wasn't loud enough, nearly all say it is overpriced. My perception is that the Euro muffler is a little cheaper than a US one, and as I recall is in the $2500 range.

iii) Larini -- I've never heard a Larini, but I've heard many of you rave about it. Both the Larini and Tubis are beautiful looking pieces of art, and that does play into this discussion since I have a pure Euro without a big black diaper hiding the muffler -- this will be exposed and fully visible when installed. Price point appears to be in the $1900 range (plus shipping from the UK?).

iv) X-Ost -- I've listened to many of you rave about the X-Ost, saying it is a very good muffler at a very good price.

    v) Borla -- Haven't heard much discussion on the board here re: Borla on a 308

I hope this generates some discussion. I'd love to hear what you all think on this topic.

    Thanks,
    -Matt

I would put an Ansa back on the car, especially if you love the sound.

......the tips are in the wrong location, good reason to avoid a stebro on a euro! the sound is as important as the looks, I prefer the tips up in the cutouts so I made mine fit the valance.

Mine is a Flowmaster based system I built up myself. It's low & throaty at low RPM, ROARS (like race mufflers) at high R's.

Most of the brands you mention have short videos posted by various 308 owners on yutube, so you can compare them there to a degree.

Here's a link to some of them-

IMHO, best value is XHOST. Like them more than Tubi personally.

Of course there's much to be said for making your own but not everyone is set up to do that.

I'm enjoying and am appreciative of all the postings in this thread. I'm presently overseas and a friend (360gtracer) is taking care of the car. What I'd like to do is be able to see and hear all the different options available, so thanks for the Youtube link modeler. I'll check that out later.

One thing I've liked about the appearance in some of the images posted so far is the tip location. Never really thought of that before, but looking at those pics makes the difference apparent.

Please, keep the discussion going if anyone else has further comments/suggestions. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be fabricating a system since I'm not in the area presently, so this will probably be a turnkey exhaust purchase.

    Thanks again.

my car's not a euro but I did go the way of a few here with the custom magnaflow route. I really like how it turned out. I know that you said turn key was the most viable but if you have change of heart I think you'll be the most happy with a custom job.

Rizzo - Which muffler did you use? The way that is plumbed, do both sides of the exhaust system mix together in the muffler or does that muffler manage to keep both sides separate as they cross over?

The dual mufflers that I've found on the MagnaFlow web site say that they are straight through, so I assume they don't mix, but obviously yours isn't straight through or it would explode!

Thanks, Paul. The people at Mille Miglia know fitment for the 308 series. Early GTBs have been a problem but, as you can see, the brackets on the muffler have a single hole for mounting and not the elongated slot. This muffler bolted right on easily. The slip joint and clamp for the front bank inlet pipe was to allow for more economical shipping charges from Australia. FChatter Gleggy mounted this same muffler on his fiberglass GTB three years ago (Thanks again, Gleggy!). His car is pictured below.

I've been following your restoration on the other thread. I like what you did for the Euro rear valance treatment and angling of your custom muffler tips. Looks nice, Paul!

I have a Stebro on my 1983 308 GTB QV Euro and it looks and sounds incredible. The company is great to work with as well. I don't think I've turned on the radio since I installed it.

My dynomax muffler is straight through as well if you look through the ends but the idea is the exhaust enters at opposite ends and hits in the middle where there is a chamber then the gasses drop down and out the two other outlets. You wouldnt run it in one end and straight across to the other end, it would be loud and basically a straight-through muffler then. It works very well and mixes both banks and the outlet pressure is the same on both banks as well.

The sound and looks of the Stebro exhaust on my 1983 308 GTBi QV Euro is excellent. No cats, and straight out (not angled like some).

I thought there was a performance advantage to keeping the two banks' exhaust pulses separate. I'll have to go look for where I read that...
