Went to change the oil on the Euro 328 today for the first time and noticed that I need a torque head socket to get the plug out. Any one know what size it is? I tried a T60 but to no avail. I'm thinking its a T70 but wanted to confirm with someone before I went and purchased one. Anyone else run into this problem before?

Also, I checked the famous 328 Oil Change Proceedure that was written up, but it was for the US Verison which requires a 17mm hex head instead of a torque head.

    Thanks!

Have you checked the owners manual?

I've got a Euro (Swiss) 328 and you use a 17mm hex. Never heard of a Torx being used for the drain plug (by the way it's Torx not "torque")

Ditto what Erich said -- if you've got an engine oil drain plug with a female Torx drive feature, it must be a substitute/replacement. The style marked "308" in this jpeg is used on 308 and early 328 and the drain plug has a female hex drive feature. The one labeled "328" is used on later 328 and has a drain plug with a male hex head -- which style pan do you have? Or something else?

I have the pan on the left. Do you happen to know what "Torx" it requires?? My owners manual does not tell you what size it is, just where the plug is located (the picture in the owners manual matches the pan I have too, so I'm not sure if it was a substitute/replacement like you mentioned). I should mention that my car is number 59649, so the engine might have used some of the left over parts when they changed from the 308 to 328.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys!!!

If it requires a torx wrench, it's not original.

No, don't know what size Torx male bit you'll need for your particular unique drain plug, but sometimes you can get a large male hex bit to sort of work too inside a female Torx socket (if the drain plug isn't uber tight).

If they haven't also changed/modified the female thread in the pan for the drain plug, you might consider getting the correct stock one -- 10275011 (I think). It isn't very expensive:

but it could be the female threads in the pan got messed up/reworked too so check that first. The thread on the stock drain plug is a M22 size (i.e., major diameter of the male thread is 22 mm).

Are you sure you are looking at the engine oil drain & not the gearbox oil drain?? As per the pic above, the 328 drain is on the horizontal & there will be "Oilio Motore" stamped in the casing somewhere near it.

    Iain,
Thanks for the concern, yes I am looking at the right one. Right beside the oil plug is the word "Oilio Motore" (The other torx plug is for the gear oil).

    Steve,
I think I'm going to purchase the T65 & T70 sockets and see what fits, don't want to strip the bolt and leave my self with a bigger issue. I have a feeling that you might be right about the threads. However, I didn't see the crush washer between the bolt and pan so maybe it was changed at some time to another plug. I'll take some pics and post them so you can see whats going on under there prior to the removal. This is really strange, but who knows. Thanks for your help.

    Mike

Why not just buy a cheap set of Torx sockets and be done with it? Well, as long as it contains the size you need. I'm sure it won't be the last time you will need one for something. A lot of cars use Torx hardware (along with other products). Oddly enough the screws that hold the engine lid insulation on my 328 are Torx screws. It's the only place I recall that they are used on the car.

If you ever change a drain plug on any car always see if you can find one with a magnet built in (if the original does not have one).

It sounds like perhaps you have Torx confused with a regular "Allen" type socket head. How many sides does the hole have? Is it star shaped? You are indicating that both the engine and transmission plugs have been replaces with a Torx plug? That sounds mighty fishy.
Post a picture up here and let us all have a look-see.

    Eulk328,
I'm planning on buying the T65 & T70 socket, but figured I'd ask to see if anyone knew which one it was.

    Brian,
Oh no...its a Torx alright, star shaped plug and all. I tried a T60 and it fit with alittle bit of play, too much to be right, so I figured its either a 65 or 70. I'm going to take the car over to my buddies this week and put it up on the lift to get some pics for you guys. Also, I am 95% sure that the tranny plug was a torx as well.

    Thanks!

If you want to be sure to get the correct size the first time, then wipe the plug and pan reall well, put a piece of paper against it, and skim a pencil or crayon w/paper removed on its side to find the edges.
