My '85 QV has a custom made exhaust system with cats. There are 2 cats welded back to back and they have "AC" stamped on them. I need to get new cats since the current ones are inop and the car needs to pass Cali smog cert next year. Would most any muffler shop be able to replace these? Am I to assume that these are AC Delco units from the stamp?

My euro 308 QV had the same thing. It came with a dual cat muffler (not as graceful as the one on your car) when I bought it. Soon, those cars started to rattle. I tried to find a muffle guy to replace them but none would touch it for legal reasons- mainly they were scared to alter "original emmissions equipment" even though I told them this is not original.

So, I worked with a buddy of mine who could weld and we replaced them ourselves. I bought cheap $100 cats that fit, but they only lasted about a year and started rattling too. I just cut them out, removed all of the stuff from inside, ran a perforated pipe down each one and threw the thing back on for track only use. I bought an original euro muffler and have been using it since- unless I feel like making some noise.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to see if anyone local would consider doing the cat replacement.

If you go the cat route, get ones with stainless steel cushioning for the catalytic elements.

The cheaper ones mount the elements with something like furnace cement that deteriorates after awhile & that's why they rattle. The Rx7 crowd found this out about 10 years ago...
