Google the manufacturer + VIN is you best bet since different manufacturers have different VIN Identifier letters albeit within the prescribed format

If you were after the the Ferrari VIN that would be easier as the format has certainly often been posted here

Ferrari VIN information is here: http://www.red-headed.com/index2.html (select Articles and then Decoding the VIN). Don't know of an equivalent for Lamborghinis.

That will be a five digit number..pre 17 digit format...

If Ferrari put it up here we can ballpark the year based upon members cars, if it's not already in a registry..

    My 1976 - 20405

    My 1977 - 22127, 22641

    See how it goes?

The last five of a 17 digit VIN will still be these sequence, probably starting around 32xxx

Euro, World market whatever, they will still be in sequence, across all models of that year.

Technically, there are no Ferrari VINs before 1980 - only serial numbers. Even post-1980 carburetted Boxers only had five-digit serial numbers, not complete 17-digit VINs. There are, literally, a handful of 1979 Ferraris that have VINs; but generally speaking, pre-1980 Ferraris don't have VINs.

THAT will make the Tax Office Lady's eyes glaze over....LOL!

Good summation tho......we put our 5 digit Serial Number into the VIN line on the form.

For the pre-1980 cars, I've seen a lot of titles with the chassis type followed by the serial number - e.g., F106AB20405.

I do indeed list mine that way, on insurance forms (still short of 17 digits, tho)..it was interesting that the Handbook at the county Tax Office wanted the MODEL DESIGNATION, followed by the ID...

    308GTB20405

That would not go into the software either, tho.

A classic Ferrari story, when a Supervisor came over and told the clerk:
"Hit "Overide", and sell this poor man some TAGS!"
Ending three days of runaround, between TxDOT, the HPD Auto Theft, and the tag office.

5 digits makes you a "Farm Implement Trailer" here....egads!

Title work goes pretty smoothly here, as they just take the old Title and emulate it.

Inspections and tags, sometimes 'no', but as they see three identical on my name it's gotten smoother.
