Ok, so i am graduating college in April, have interviews all through the month and then am considering a trip....

My best friend works in Saudi Arabia as a drilling engineer on an offshore rig and, well my higher education path has taken a little longer than most due to the nature of transportation design programs, internships, etc, so I'm the last one of my friends to graduate. Anyways, after highschool his parents moved to Switzerland, and I haven't been to Europe in a while. So we got to talking... He's got a break right when I'm going to be finishing up my preliminary interviews, and we'd both like to go back to Monaco, but for the GP this time. Unfortunately he needs to return to work on May 23 so its not possible this year. Oh well, we'd have been sleeping in the car and much much poorer than everyone else at the Monaco GP, so we'll do it right another year...

*The time frame I am looking at is pretty much May 1-20th*

I have outlined the following possibilities:

    LMS Spa 1000km - May 11.

    Turkish GP - May 11.

    A1GP finale Silverstone - May 4.

WTCC Valencia - May 18 (cutting it a little too close)

Ok, I would love to go to a GP, though its not like I will never get another chance, and in fact I may ALSO be able to do Montreal in June. But how is the Turkish GP? We are both 24 y/o white Americans and last time I was in Turkey it was before the world went to shxt, and it was actually quite fun. But that was... 2000.

I've heard fairly bad stories recently about shxt happening at football games in Turkey, so am I going to get prison shanked at the Turkish GP or anything?

My second (1st?) choice would be the LMS race at Spa. My favorite circuit, and what a historic race that is. Plus this year's LMS, Le Mans, and ALMS is shaping up to be a VERY outstanding family of series, both machines and teams. The problem I am encountering is funny: I can't find tickets to this!!! I have been searching around, where can I get any info on this. Carol maybe?

Unfortunately I think the WTCC round is going to be a bit too close to the deadline to leave, so i will go ahead and rule it out. Just like Barcelona GP would be a bit too early to leave the states for me, since I have obligated interviews.

After that, I would be very interested in A1GP at Silverstone. I am not quite as impressed with the machines to be honest, but the racing is very nice. But this is admittingly a series I haven't followed as closely as Sportscars, F1, and WTCC.

Ok, so I'm asking everyone here to offer up some advice, input, suggestions. I'm just 24, getting out of college, so i'm not going to be booking a nice hotel and playing poker at Casino Royale. I will mostly be relying on the contacts and friends i have throughout Europe to get by, with a lot of time probably being spent in Germany and Italy. Specifically, can someone point me in a good direction for the Spa race? Carol do you have any contacts for this? I know you do for certain races, and of course I am aware that its not as if I am family, I hope I'm not being too crass in asking.

    Thanks FChat.

Sorry Lindsay. I don't have any contacts but If I did I would absolutely hook you up. Congrats though on having this amazing opportunity...I'm very envious!
My choice would be between Spa and the Turkish GP. Though for me, it would be too close to call. It would have to come down to the flip of a coin.

Btw...have any extra room in your suitcase? ;)

For the Spa 1000 km you've got to check this site now & then: http://www.lemans-series.com/en/s52_circuits/s52p01_presentation.php?circuit=4 more info will be there in a few weeks. I've been there for the 1000 KM a few times and there is not a lot of public interest so buying your tickets on the spot is no problem.
Keep in mind that it can be cold in Spa even in May, so bring all kind of clothes for heat and cold.

For Monaco there is also the historic GP in May: www.acm.mc

And what about the Mille Miglia ? or Fia GT at 18/05 in Monza ?

www.fia.com, this is their official site, 2008 calendar.

Try Google for specific info, for example if you Google LeMans you should get www.lemans.org

Take the Ferry to Palermo. Rent a car. Drive the original Targa Florio. Eat by the Sea. Hold Hands as you walk the beach.

Personally I think you would enjoy the Goodwood Festival of Speed Best. That's not in May but do get there one fine day.

Sorry for delay - haven't been on due to other things. I was going to mention the Monaco Historics - we are going to that, meeting friends from Scotland in Nice and another couple in Monaco. Tickets were very reasonable - got them thru www.justticket.co.uk If the Historics weren't the same weekend, we'd be in Spa for the LMS race. I noticed tickets aren't available as of yet for the Spa LMS from the circuit, unless you opt for one of the packages from www.lemans-series.com - we've done the Discovery package and it's definitely worth it. You can expect fairly low price entry tickets for the LMS race. We're headed to Barcelona in a couple weeks and paid 12€ per person for the weekend - it was on the circuit website. In any case, LMS has some very neat support races and the pitwalk pass is definitely worth it as 25€ pp as well as the gridwalk pass at 50€ pp. LMS program starts on Friday with the 1000 Km or 6 hour race on Sunday. When we don't go to Spa for an F1 race, we've stayed in Trois Points at Le Beau Site - lovely place but you might find it already full for the LMS race. We experienced Spa last year in a different capacity than F1 and found it a thousand times better - attended the FIA-GT Spa 24 Hour race - the entire track is open except for the reserved areas above the pits. We entered the track after parking near the hotel in Franchorchamps, walking in near LeSource. There are several grocery stores in Stavelot but our preference is the one on the right just past the circle. It provides a great place to gather goodies to take to the event as well as a good place to stop afterwards and restock for the next day. You can go back to the circle, and head out for a short drive to Franchorchamps. When we've gone for F1 races, we usually stay in Bastogne - lovely French restaurant in town just past the square as well as a delicious pizza restaurant at the end of the block from the hotel (Best Western Hotel Melba) and in the square. The circuit at Spa is about a 45 minute drive. Enjoy.

    Carol
