If a person were to import a 1993 348 from the U.K. (left hand drive so USA compatible) and the 348 has met U.K emission regulations and has its Catalytic Converters etc, does any one know if there would likely be any emmissions issues here in the USA equipment wise on a 348 from Europe that has its Catalytic Converters etc? Also are there any other safety equipment issues that European 348 would have compared to one in the USA that would prevent a European 348 from being regestered and driven here in the USA?

Do the Euro cars have the "mad mouse" automatic seatbelts? Post-1990 in the US you have to have either airbags or "passive restraint" system.

Also I know the US requires some kind of bracing in the doors (my 380SL was retrofitted c. 1990 for this) that the Euro cars might not have.

Probably there is other stuff too but I'm not sure.

    Cheers

Since you can now find 348s in the U.S. in the high $30k to low $40k range, it hardly seems worthwhile to import one from Europe. By the time you pay shipping, tax and conversion cost you would be way in the hole before you even drove the car.

The car must meet EPA and DOT(bumpers, bracing in the doors, supplemental restraints etc) specifications in order to import, if it does not it must be converted upon arrival $$$$$$ also duty on the vehicle to enter the US will be 2.5% You must file form HS-7 at the time it is imported to declare if it complies with DOT requirements. as a general rule vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with all federal motor vehicle safety standards. Vehicles manufatured after Sept. 1, 1978 must also meet the bumper standard and vehicles beginning with model year 1987 must meet the theft - prevention standard. the vehicle will have a certification label affixed by the original manufaturer near the driver's side door if it does not have this sticker it must be imported as a non comforming vehicle then the importer must contract with a DOT registered importer to modify the vehicle and certify it The importer also must post a a DOT bond for 1 and 1/2 times the vehicle's dutiable value this is in addition to the normal Customs entry bond Copies of the DOT bond and the contract with the RI must be attached to the HS-7 form you can also check www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import

Can you show me where I can pick up a 348 in the 30s? ;)

Never seen one dip below the 40K mark.

Patience, I found mine below the 40K mark if you buy other than red, tb , miles over 30K you should have no trouble finding one with service history, you can get a resale red/tan , under 30K miles , ts in the mid to upper 40's .
