A few weeks ago I had to bail my friend out of jail. We were out at 6am and the cops show up and ask for IDs (long story). He had two warrants for not showing up to court, so they take him away. Booked at 7:30a, or so and out by around 1:30pm. He could have sworn that he was in there for a year, he says. He's usually pretty positive about things and was in solitary for most of the time but I've never seen him so shaken up before.

Scary. Even for tiny, tiny little problems that could land you in jail they treat you like a murderer.

i've had a cousin do a dime in chino for drug/assault charges an uncle did 1yr for beating the crap out of cop and an old friend went in for 3yrs for screwing the under age nanny -dumb ass-. anyway point is, it aint pretty. you have your basic cell and you'd be suprised at what they can have, t.v's microwaves, books, like a mini open apt.

then there is the subculture, gangs, gaurds, and you have 'prison gay' i'm not kidding here 'prison gay' is not gay and telling them otherwise well get you a one way ticket to the infirmery. hollywood tarts up the whole thing makes it look rough and gritty, reality is far from that though. everyone i've known that went would rather shoot it out with the cops then go back.

and for those wondering my faimly has serious issues with authority, three relatives have all done time. and about 10 others have spent anywhere from a long weekend to 6mnths in county lockup. all related to drug charges and felony assault on an a officer. in one instance a dirty LAPD cop was running meth and my uncle who was supply/manufacture got into an argument over cost. long story short- cop was slapped on the hand and my uncle had to become an informant for the DEA. needles to say i've seen my share of dirty/bad cops and it does not help the guys trying to be good cops, even IA to me is a joke. please note this was 15yrs ago, long before LAPD started to clean out the ranks.

i'm not defending the actions of my drugy faimly members, i just have a hard time with this so called 'war on drugs' it made my uncle very rich. too many hands in the 'pot' and money to be made.

but back to your prison question, pray you never end up there. you do not come out the same.the 'inside' will leave you scarred. oh and prison is far from the 'reform' idea it once was, these criminals come out meaner stronger and with more hate then when they went in. the lack of the value of life is another odd one to, they lose that idealogy.

You know, minimum security prison is no picnic. I had a client in there once. He said the trick is kick someone's ass the first day, or become somebody's *****. Then everything will be all right.

I spent a night in Dubai prison. Not just the jail at the police station, the actual prison. The judge knew his sentence would be thrown out on appeal so he held his decision until it was too late to file the appeal that day, just to make me spend one night in prison.

So now I can impress people and tell them I've done time in a Middle Eastern prison. It was pretty laid-back, actually. By the time I was processed in the commissary was closed so a guy gave me a pack of cigarettes. I played a game of chess (I lost) with some old guy that was in for watching porn. Somebody loaned me a book (Tom Clancy or something) and I just generally chilled. The food wasn't up to much, but not actually horrible.

All in all, a lot easier than basic training, but yeah, one night was enough. And it was worth it!

There's a guy I work with who used to be a prison guard. He said that everyone who has been in prison has been raped, whether they admit it or not. Thats scary.

Friend of mine works at a prison here in Canada. It's not like the Alcatraz you see in the movies - it's a clean, well-run, professional institution.

Think of the worst, most violent, disgusting inhumane criminal acts you've ever heard about. In Canada, we use Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka as a reference point (google them if you're interested). Many of the inhabitants in prison are guilty of stuff 10x worse than that, it's just never made the news. Stuff that makes you want to throw up and weep at the same time - and this could be the guy in the next cell.

I know a guy who did a year in the joint for shooting somebody. The guy is a psychopath and would think nothing of driving all the way across the country to knock the **** out of somebody for something they said on the Intarweb. He has two Phaetons and a 911.
