Been on here for about 4-5 years now... how time flies :)

In the entire time I have hardly seen any posts on changing coolant hoses buried in the dash, or rubber clutch parts/tubing in the front of the cars/tunnel...

    Why is that?

Should we all be having meltdowns of rubber parts in the dash/heater/tunnel by now??? Are all of the tubes metal/plastic/etc?

    Insight?

The forward coolant hoses have two things going for them that help extend their lives:

    1. Unless you always run your heater, they rarely have hot coolant flowing in them, and

    2. unlike hoses within the engine compartment, their exterior is surrounded by cool (not hot) air (so their average temperature is a lot lower -- even when hot coolant is flowing in them).

Regular coolant changing probably is a help too (and probably for the first 10 years of their lives most F get treated fairly well service-wise even if GQs). IIRC, the only rubber line on the clutch up front is the zero pressure line from the reservoir to the clutch master cylinder so not much physical stress on that one.

Doesn't mean that they will last forever, and your '87 (21 years old) is probably getting into the window where problems in these areas might start showing up (but I wouldn't do anything pro-active -- JMO).
