Curious if anybody else has ever known somebody who simply disappeared, never to be seen by anybody in your known circle of friends or associates?
Me and many of my co-workers worked with a guy for about 10 years. He quit to move to Las Vegas. He had a legit job, but he also loved sports and sports betting. He regularly kept in touch by phone with another of our co-workers. Then he stopped calling. His number was no longer in service. To make a long story short, after about 5 years, he has never be heard from by his old friend, other co-workers, or his own mother. He has all but disappeared. One guy paid a service to try and locate him in any known public record. He did not appear in any prison inmate records. We have talked about him often. Several dark scenarios seem most probable. He liked to visit Mexico from time to time. We suspect that he could have run into trouble across the border and ended up in a Mexican jail. Or he crossed paths with some really bad guys and ended up swimming with the fishes or taking a dirt nap in the desert. Or he could have run up some gambling debts on this side of the border and was given a ride into the Las Vegas desert and never returned. About the only good possibility is that he ran up a gambling debt and is laying low for a LONG time. But he has vanished. It's kind of weird to be good friends and co-workers with somebody for over a decade, and then have them vanish off the face of the earth.
    Anybody have a similar tale?

Some folks who lived 3 doors down from me growing up and who were very close friends to my parents for the past 30 years had a son who was about 6 years older than me named Mark.

I never really knew him very well because of the age difference. He had a reputation for being pretty wild and doing lots of crazy stuff. A rebellious teenager, recreational drugs, lots of parties.... like that. This was in the early 1980s.

After highschool he moved to Florida and began learning to fly. His father, like mine, was an airline pilot. Well, he learned to fly and started making his living that way. He flew as an instructor, did some charter work, did some crop dusting and did other flying jobs to build up hours.

Then he vanished. Not a peep for months. His parents inquired of all his known friends and employers, but nobody had a clue. They eventually hired a private detective who apparently worked on the case for a couple of years. He never turned up anything concrete other than finding his car parked in long term parking at the airport.

It was suspected that he may have begun flying drugs, but there was never any proof or even hard evidence. But its been well over 20 years and nobody has ever heard anything from him. Just gone. His parents have never gotten over it.

A cousin. Uncle, really, but we're close in age, so "cousin" it is. Or was. He walked on the wild side.

  5. When I was in college I cut grass for a neighbor. He was running for local political office positions, and a builder at the time. He then started an investment company, which turned out not to be an investment co. The FBI etc. came after him, then he disappeared. 2 million was gone also. That was 6 years ago. But the money must have run out, he just showed back up. I would imagine without any money.

How coincidental that you mention that fact. Our co-worker friend also fell out of communication for about 6 months one time. Apparently he had flown off to Mexico for several months and also left his car in the long term parking lot at the airport. He had neglected to keep up on his car payments. The authorities were therefore interested in his whereabouts. But when he came back after a few months, he cleared everything up. But that was then, for only a few months. Now, he is long gone for years and nobody really knows anything. Our friend also liked to walk very close to the not-so-legal side of the law, but he always seemed to stay JUST on this side of the line. Perhaps he strayed across the line.

To this very day, those of us that were there suspect this guy was on the Secret Witness protection program of some sort.

During the years of '97 through '99 I was part of a team dedicated to weed out computers that could not successfully turn their BIOS year clocks to 2000. This was a massive project and contract that took us all over the USA. The company put an open call out for some "bodies", basicly some temporaries to do some of the grunt work. So we get some new faces and everyone is good to go, but one guy in particular was unusual. Then to add to the unusual-ness, he looked like one of the charachters off the Sopranos. When guys sit around talking about general stuff like, "Where do you live" etc.. His answers were very vegue, short or simple. At first we thought this guy is just not the social type, but stranger things were to happen. Weeks later, we get assigned to a different city and this guy comes along with the team. Somebody asks just out of pure curiosity and conversation, "Hey, have you ever to this city before? He says no, and had always lived in California, never went anywhere. Stuffed in a rental car, all of us are heading to the hotel to check in and you know how it is when you travel, you don't know what street is what, should you turn at the next light..so we get lost! Guess who happened to know where to go. So he pipes up from the back seat, turn here...make a left here.. we're driving through some gawd awful backroads and boom! There's the hotel. Ok, so he has us currious now. Nobody prys the issue to him as why he knew where to go, but they just kind of go with it. During the week, he knew where all the best spots to eat were, which bars were the hottest on the scene and he's never been anywhere.
About a month later, were back in California on a different site and calls the boss about some car trouble and that he'll be late. The guy dissapeared off the face of the earth. His residence was empty, nobody knew where he went. That is just odd.

    Yup,

One of my best friends from high school went off to college, and we never heard from him again. He was kind of a walk on the wild side guy in HS.

    Various rumors started to surface.

He had moved to San Francisco to practice an alternative life style.

    He worked for the government.

He changed his name, who knows, to protect him from the mafia or whatever. But, no one heard from him AT ALL. Tried to find him when I was on the coast once, no luck.

Well, about three months ago I got an email from him 33 years later. He tracked me down on Classmates.com. Not a word for all that time. Turns out he was in San Francisco, a suburb actually, married with a couple kids. Short hair and wing tips, was how he described himself, working for a bank and serving on various civic committees.

From pot smoking hippie in the early 70's to wing tipped banker. Who'd a thunk it.

Yes. Growing up my best friend and I really had fun with his older 1st cousin. The guy took us fishing and shooting and was a great athlete and academician. A real role model type. He went off to University and vanished from a bar one night. We were in middle school at the time. No body, no evidence of foul play and all these years later, still nothing. It was catastrophic for his family. I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on my worst enemy.

Yes, in High School my grilfriend. We went out about for about 2 years. One day she knocked on the door to the class I was in and said it was really inportant and she had to speak to me. The teacher said no. I was going to get up and walk out on him but it was only like 2 mins. to the bell so I waited. When I left the class she was gone and I have never seen or heard from her to this day. 30 years later. School would not say if her records were transfered or anything. Only thing I was pretty sure of was I think her mom packed up and left her dad. We were pretty close, 2 years and then poof gone like a puff of smoke.

    Interesting.

Have they tried to track down any planes which went missing around the time he did?

    Some scenarios:

Changed his identity to hide from drug people, possibly still alive.
Changed his identity to hide from law enforcement, possibly still alive, maybe incarcerated overseas.
    Died in plane crash.
    Killed by drug people.
Killed in some other unrelated incident, body not recovered?

The fact the car was found at the airport (which airport was it?) points towards something aviation related. If he was flying 'under the radar' and crashed, it is quite possible that the plane went down in the ocean without anyone knowing.

What type of aircraft was he flying at the time? Don't all aircraft taking off from US airports have to file a flight plan?

Had a few friends in HS that disappeared, we ran in a group of about 10 guys, we all were pretty good friends, after HS, two of them disappeared, and have not contacted any of the other 8, ever, that was 30 years ago.

Also had a friend that used to keep in touch with me via phone about once a month, said he was moving from Grinnell IA to Minneapolis, he called me once from MN, said he had moved, then, nothing. It's been 5 years.......

I knew/know Brian Schaffer...the Ohio State Uni student that disappeared. He's been on national news. It's wierd because video shows him at the bar at 2:00a.m. then he completely disappeared. I think he's gotta be dead. There's no activity on his CC's, bank accounts, or cell phone. No activity since the night he disappeared. It's wierd. 6'2 late 20's male.....Normal guy no "wierd habits" Honor student at OSU medical school. GONE.

All of those scenarios were investigated at length over a period of years. The parents were not short on cash and they apparently spent lots trying to find answers. They never found anything concrete and only rumors that he may have been involved in flying drugs.

I believe the car was found parked at an airport in Sarasota, which was near where he lived at the time. Nobody knew for sure how long it had been there. They do not know what kind of plane he was flying or even if he was flying at the time he vanished. Nobody even knows for sure what day he may have left. They of course have a time frame based on phone records and such but its not definitive.

His mother still harbors hope that he is alive. Witness protection program? In a foreign jail? In hiding? Who knows?

His father is a bit more realisitic. Perhaps he crashed into the ocean, perhaps the crossed the wrong guys and they killed him? But after this many years the father does believe he is dead. I tend to agree. But then again, nobody really knows anything.

a first cousin of mine dropped off the face of the earth for 15 years after his mother died of cancer in 1979 and his father remarried soon after. His brother and sister finally located him after the father died to tell him that he had inherited his dad's house but he just told them to get screwed, disappeared again, and hasn't been heard from since...that was 12 years ago.
