Well, when I got 2014 FF last April as my everyday driver, I told myself you will do everything in this car that you did in your outgoing Audi A8. It’s been parked in airport garages for days, I don’t park 200 yards away in lots to avoid door dings, and I never worry about putting miles on it.

Well, this week brings a new one. Driving across the state in -5 degree F in snow packed conditions. I will report back on how the Michelin Sport 4 all seasons do. I will not be driving through anything unplowed, but it will be very cold and blowing.

Before I leave, we are supposed to get 4-6 inches here. Plan to take her out in my hilly neighborhood to see how the tires and AWD do. Will report back on that as well.

Good luck. In my experience, full winters are far superior to all seasons, especially in the conditions which you’ll be encountering. All seasons give you the worst of both summer and winter tyres and the weather window in which they are preferable to either dedicated summer or winter tyres is narrow.

If you have time, I strongly recommend a switch to full winter tyres.

Couldn't agree with you more. On all my Audis I ran dedicated winter performance tires.

I self volunteered to help add to an earlier debate on this forum as to whether these new all seasons from Michelin match up to the hype of actually being much better in winter than most. So, we shall see. Tire review channels seem to think so.

Plus, where I live, it could be 50F next week. Kansas City is all over the place in the winter.

Fair enough. The reviews look good enough and for largely ‘summer’ temps with the odd risk of cold or snow they make a sensible choice. But man, -5F on packed snow would have me reaching for the winter set given the extra safety margin of the winters over the all seasons.

Let us know how it goes and drive safe

this is awesome, cant wait to hear how it goes...in snow the FF is solid with winter tires...on plowed roads you will be fine with the all seasons...wld be nice if nokian, michelin or someone came out with all weather tires.

Earlier this year we had to go to Oslo from Stockholm. This was when the wind was very bad, the weather was way wrong in all directions, and it was just awful. Under normal circumstances I would strongly suggest take the train or something - however this was that day (well days to be more precise) when planes and trains just did not run or fly for that matter. This day we decided to go to Oslo... Great :-(

Anyway, the weather was "only" bad out of Stockholm, and when we passed Jakobsberg - which is about say 22 km from start, the weather would be a bit better, and when we passed Västerås (about another 100 km or so) weather cleared up to full sun, and well a bit of wind - but nothing even close to the bad bad bad start.

The thing is, in the FF I had more or less only one minor thing during the first 22 km - all of a sudden the wind got a grip on the car in a place where it is two lanes - all of a sudden I was in the right lane instead of the left one I just was driving in. That part of the road is known to be slippery in any circumstances (and that is why I was in left instead of right lane), so slippery yes - surprised? o'yes of course - but as I wrote, I know it is slippery, it is a slow looong left turn for a reason...

This drive was done on Micheline winter tires.

Oh by the way we passed a lot of cars that had run off the road, so it was slippery, and yes I drove in manual mode all the way to Västerås, and never over 4th gear. I switched to auto a bit after Västerås when roads was dry again.

So yes, the FF is a hell of a car to drive during winter, and a great cruiser for about all time all year around.
However, drive with your head when it is bad weather - don't assume that the car will do the work for you.

    Yes sir!

Although I prefer the "Sport" mode most of the time, during winter - and during the trip I mentioned above, which was in January - I seem to be stuck in Winter mode... We can have anything from just cold weather to one meter of snow - and everything in between during November to March...
