To say that I am impressed is an understatment!

 

$350 million a day in oil revenues with 10% of the worlds reserves. 25% of the worlds cranes are working there. No income tax. 24 yr. old college grads making $180K US. 4 million population. "We will be the cultural center of the world"

New culture?

Probably not a hotbed of solar tech.

 

If they were smart, they'd put some of that oil revenue into alternative technology. Whoever is the leader in solar/wind/nuclear etc when the oil runs dry wins the game

While I can admire the technological challenge in designing the worlds tallest building I find Dubai, on the whole, tacky and ostentatious.

Theres a great line in Jurassic Park " Just because you can doesnt mean you should" That aplies to all these 'largest whatevers'...be it buildings,. homes, yachts...

 

Overbuilt

 

Just think of this place every time you put gas in your vehicles.

 

They are building a zero-emissions city right now.

It's amazing where slavery can bring you in 2008.

 

I have been often and let me put it this way. The native population is only around 35%. The people that have to work in Dubai can not afford to live there. It is like visiting the Wizard of Oz.....dont look behind the curtain and you will be better for it. That being said, it is a great place to visit and I always have a good time.

I´m just surprised that Dubai is just growing and growing to one of the biggest and greatest international cities for tourists.

but nevertheless, when I checked your sites, I had the feeling that Dubai exegerates a bit.
But maybe, it is the typical style of Arabians.
When having something, it should be the largest, biggest and best over any other.

 

The architecture in Dubai is like nothing I've seen anywhere else. I am going back down there in December. Haven't been there since I moved in 2004. It's amazing how much it grew. I still remember as a kid in the 90s we would spend the day at the one or two nice places, and then all of a sudden buildings started growing.

Unfortunately that is the truth.

 

Yeah, it will be great when gas hits $7/gallon, they can then build another indoor ski resort.

Dubai reminds me of one of those people that hit the lottery and become addicted to buying stuff. Doesnt matter what it is. They have to have it.

 

I bet it still is going to be built. Well, I don't know what's going on with it now, but it seems like such fun to visit Dubai, probably when they "finish" this unstoppable construction phase.

 

One place I definitely need to visit in my lifetime.
