The choice of great V8 engines is almost overwhelming, but we've come up with a list of some of the best

Is there an engine layout more primevally satisfying than the V8? Whether it’s screaming to the heavens in the back of something low-slung and Italian or rocking a car along its roll axis in an American muscle car, few engines offer a greater breadth of character.

Thankfully, V8s aren’t as rare in evo’s world as they are in the wider automotive
landscape – in the last few months we’ve driven the Mustang GT, Panamera GTS, Lexus RC-F and our long-term Jaguar F-type R among others. But such is the sheer number we’ve driven in the past, it’s not long at all before some favourites emerge….

Dario Franchitti – columnist (and four-time IndyCar champion…)

The 1998 Honda Indycar engine – single turbo, over 900hp, smooth as silk, clever 9th butterfly to hold boost in the plenum so no lag. 250mph with a Hanford "parachute" rear wing and it was still accelerating!

Also the 427 side oiler motor out of a Cobra.

And the Ferrari 355 is one of the all time classic road car engines. That red line was almost unheard of when it was introduced. It makes a lovely noise and gets sweeter the closer to the red line you get, doesn't drone and sound like a Formula First unlike later Ferrari V8s. If you take off the cats and silencers it sounds even better, not that anyone would do such a thing...

    Nick Trott – editor

Lastly, the five-valve V8 in the F355 "with an appropriate exhaust makes a noise to give your goosebumps goosebumps."

Change INDYCAR to CART and it's accurate. The '98 IRL cars/engines were junk.

All great engines but I love that line! I still get goosebumps in my 355 when I first take it out on the weekend and hear the bypass open!

Franchitti raced CART, so I think that's what he means when he says "Indycar".

I've long thought the 355 sounds very similar to the CART motor, which is a deriative of the Cosworth DFV-- same high rpm shreik/tone, minus the whistle of the turbo. Best street car note ever!

if compared to a CS which also has 5 valves.......is 355 still the better screamer?

It's all a matter of different strokes for different folks!

The 355 engine makes a fabulous noise, and yes, it is a V8 in configuration, but the flat plane crank means it operates as a pair of straight fours sat side by side and so doesn't give out the classical V8 sound track that most people expect to hear.

For many people, nothing can beat the classic rumble of a traditional, large capacity, highly tuned American V8, especially when it is revved up and it brutally rips the air apart with all the finesse of Mike Tyson in a bad mood.

The likes of TVR have also made some incredible sounding V8's that sound as awesome as the 355 engine, but in a different way due to their standard firing orders.

As I have often said, one man's super model is another man's skinny bird!

that was a 360 i suspect with standard exhaust...in the above video, the 355 was the better sounding car
